Picked up an Odyssey White Hot Rossie Putter today...

I used to have the really old school Odyssey Rossie and loved it, went to a blade and used one ever since. Last time I played with my dad, I putted with his old Rossie and forgot how much I missed it.

It looks like a quality putter and I got it for $49 so I don't see too many negatives.

Mr. Plow 06-02-2010 02:44 PM

Played at Sand Creek Station on Sunday. Didn't play great, but the course is great. Had some good shots....had some bad ones.....but had a great time. Gonna have to do it again.

Anybody competing in the ESPN Golf Challenge?

http://www.espngolf.com/amateurs.htm

WilliamTheIrish 06-02-2010 04:10 PM

My first round of the year was Saturday May 22nd. Hadn't swung a club since the previous September. So I figured I'd use the round as a driving range session. If I mangled a few shots, so be it. And Of course, I mangled many. But never lost my smile. Tried to be slow on the backswing and just watch the ball. Shot 112.

Second round May 23rd. Muscles were limbered up and I felt pretty good. Hit a majority of good shots. Had 5 pars but putted poorly for 5 double bogies and couple of really bad triples. Shot 93.

Still haven't been to the range and last weekend I played three rounds. 90, 88, 86. Poor putting kept me from hitting low 80's. Noticed clubs kinda slipping in my hand. Hadn't re-gripped in 2 years. Took em all in.

Been to the range with only my putter. Laying down tees and just practicing straight back and straight through. Dying to get my clubs back so I can hit the range.

Headed to Bella Vista soon and want to have myself ready to go.

WilliamTheIrish 06-02-2010 06:02 PM

Hamas, I need your advice. I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a couple of Ping items.

1)LH Ping G10 Grafalloy Epic shaft. $110

2) PING i15 IRON SET 4-PW.LEFT-HANDED.495$

MATCHING SERIAL NUMBER
Black Dot (Standard loft & lie)
AWT (Ascending Weight Technology) STIFF FLEX STEEL SHAFTS
Upgraded Ping ID8 Ribbed Grips
Set Measures Standard in Length.

Obviously they are used. Have wanted to buy a set of Ping's for a while. If this isn't a good deal can you help me find the best chance at getting a good used for the right price? LH'ed of course.

1) Great deal if that club is in decent shape. That shaft has suffered from breakage issues, so you might check to see if it was WRX installed or done aftermarket.

2) I'm assuming the shafts are CS-Lite? Those are good shafts. Again, a really good deal. FWIW, you may be able to find new i10s or even i5s for that price or lower at a local shop.

Why don't driving ranges have grass around here yet? Who wants to hit off of mats? Worthless.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-02-2010 07:37 PM

The worst thing about hitting off of mats isn't the turf, it's the fact that I can never find a tee of a suitable length for my driver. They are either 5" off the ground for hackers who top everything or 1.5", which makes it too tall for fairway woods and too short for a driver.

I hear you there. It also completely limits your mishits on your short irons. You hit one fat? Big deal. Your club will just scoot along the mat and you'll still hit a good shot. I want to see a foot long divot and my ball go 10 feet and then cuss at it. Not to mention the green mat discolors my clubs so I have to scrub that mat residue off :cuss::cuss:

Yep. I hate those ****ing things. About all mats are useful for is warming up or hitting the range in winter when the grass is usually closed.

That's a huge thing people don't realize about mats - they completely mask all/most your ball striking deficiencies.

Depends on your knowledge of your own swing and your feel.

Personally, I can tell you where I hit every ball based on how it feels 1/10 of a second after impact.

Unfortunately, I've played at enough munis to where I've had few other options when I've warmed up.

Right now, the course where I usually hit balls has octagonal mats, which can actually make it difficult for you to take a full stance.

Sound can also tell a huge amount, especially on iron shots.

Went out today and bracketed my 9 by going triple (on a straight 370 yard Par 4 where it took me five shots to get down)-double (after hitting a perfect drive but misjudging the cut off angle wrong and ending up right behind a tree and having a 4 footer lip out) to shoot 42.

That said, I didn't hit any iron shots solid today, didn't chip well, but I only missed one putt inside of 6 feet, and hit the driver pretty well.

4/9 GIR, 2/7 FIR, 17 putts

I wish it were that easy. I really do. I just can't seem to enjoy a game that I have no hope of ever doing well at.

Because of back and neck spasms I haven't played in two weeks. I'm not quite recovered yet and I'm headed to the beach for 8 days and that's a week from today. Since I'm not playing today there's no need to take the clubs on this vacation. It would be waste of time and money. So it looks like before I even got a real grip on my game I'm taking a month off. Damn the luck!

Wow what a choke in the Fed Ex/St. Jude ..... Up 3 with just the 18th hole to play and Robert Garrigus takes a triple. He had a chance to win on tour for the first time and gacked it. Now a 3 man playoff.

WilliamTheIrish 06-13-2010 04:02 PM

Back from 5 days in Arkansas playing golf. Had a fine 84 on Thursday after being unable to even get off the tee the previous two days. On a 515 yard par 5 I hit on in three and the shot rolled across the face of the cup and missed dropping in for an eagle by an inch. The ball settled about a foot away and I tapped in for bird.

Had a triple and two doubles to finish or it could have been better.

Yep players playing 18 in the playoff, he is now dead behind a tree. I mean at the base of the tree with no shot into the green. Talk about a turnaround. He played 18 terribly in regulation, but just piped a 3 wood about 335 off the tee and is now drawing dead so to speak. Unluckly.

Pablo 06-13-2010 04:03 PM

Garrigus has been absolutely LAWLrific.

BWillie 06-13-2010 04:03 PM

I got the shanks. Last time I played I shot 36-45 and could feel them coming on the second nine. Went to the range and I shanked like 1/4 of my shots. I almost hit this girl who had had a Nebraska University bag hitting a few stalls down from me. Embarrassing.

Stinger 06-13-2010 04:16 PM

And Robert Garrigus is the first one out of the playoffs. From sure winner to goat in 2 holes. Hope he finishes strong this year gotta feel for the guy trying to get his first win.

Stinger 06-13-2010 04:44 PM

Ok this tournament is getting pathetic..... In the 3rd playoff hole Westwood misses from 6-7 feet Karlson had the exact same putt and misses, both bogie 14. Moving on to the 4th playoff hole and back to the 18th. :shake:

RJ 06-13-2010 07:08 PM

Have any of you guys ever taught your child to play golf?

I've been taking my 7 y/o daughter to the local course where we hit some balls on the driving range and mess around on the putting green. I bought her a driver, a 7 iron and a putter. She seems to be enjoying it so far. I've shown her a basic grip and how to set her feet but other than that I'm trying to just let her hit and have fun.

I'm not sure what to do from here. Since I'm really not much of a golfer myself I don't really have any business being a teacher. But on the other hand I'm not sure I need to be. Right now I get a bucket of balls and we take turns hitting for a few minutes at a time, then we go putt for a while and then we go out to lunch. A good time is had by all.

Anyone have any experience with this? Right now I'm thinking we'll just keep doing what we're doing but I wonder if I could add some real instruction without her noticing. I don't want to turn it into a chore.

Ah, BellaVista. 3 feet inside of Arkansas.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-13-2010 07:20 PM

You can teach your kid to play golf even if you aren't that good.

Focus on the following:

Grip, stance, and alignment. Have her hit balls with a shaft or golf club at her feet, pointing down the target line.

Also, it will be far more helpful if you teach her how to chip and putt, and then hit pitch shots, and then full shots. You should learn golf from green to tee, not vice versa.

The first thing they should learn is the difference between a full swing and a chip or pitch shot.

The first thing in regards to shortgame play is how to chip and run the ball.

Then they have to learn when to use it.

It's Amazing how beginners will stand up to a chip shot like they're going to hit a full shot.

You have to get closer to it, play it back in your stance. let go of the club, toe it in(close the face) then grip it. Don't take it back past knee high depending on the length, slope and general conditions of the shot. Don't take it to far back and quit on it(decelerate on your through swing). You'll most likely hit behind it but you could also blade it. Chances are you won't hit it crisp regardless. Keeping a firm left wrist is helpfull but don't over do it and tighten up.. Also stroke it with the tempo of a putt. (If you have a tempo to your stroke?)

And above all else "relax"!

And don't forget to visualize! Vi-Vi-Visualize!

;)

I've been using a club to keep her lined up. That turned out to be very important cause when it's not there she appears to have no sense of direction. She must get that from her mom. :)

Spending more time chipping is a good idea. That might be fun.

The big challenge with a kid that age is keeping things fun. Last week I took a stuffed monkey with us on the putting green and set it over the cup for a target. That was a big hit. In fact, two other boys about the same age there with their dad wanted to come over and putt with us cause, you know, we had a monkey. But I can't expect to come up with genius ideas like that every week.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-16-2010 04:09 PM

I would also recommend that you play games with her on the putting green. Also, don't keep her out there for long periods of time.

You can have her pick holes on the green to putt to and treat each one of them as a golf hole. Putt along with her and let her win most of the time.

I think chipping and putting should be illegal. Once you hit the green, if you get it within 10 feet, it's a zero. Within 15 feet it's a one. Just on the green two. That is the sole reason why I never was a real great player.

The elephant in room about Pebble Beach: poa annua greens.

The shit is just noxious. It grows at an incredibly high rate, and extremely unevenly. It also seeds very easily.

It makes luck far more important in putting greens than it is on any other surface.

The moderate climate of the Monterrey Bay allows it to thrive. You can find it on a lot of local courses in the spring, but the summer heat kills the rat shit out.

Yep.

My FIL was asking why so many putts were bouncing yesterday.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 12:56 PM

To me, I can't consider Pebble the best of the best when it comes to courses because of those greens.

The views are as good as it gets, and the layout is fantastic, but the greens are among the worst on tour, if not the worst.

It's not an accurate test of golf.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 03:12 PM

Tiger finished at +4.

Phil just birdied the hardest hole on the course to go +3.

3,4, and 7 are birdie holes.

You need to be able to play those holes about -5 for the week.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 03:26 PM

And Philly Mick pours one into the heart from 10 feet on 3. Great approach from the fairway bunker.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 03:42 PM

Phil is dropping the ****ing hammer out here. Birdies 2 (near impossible), then 3 and 4.

3 under through 4 holes.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 04:16 PM

Mickelson is now -4 through 6 holes, bringing himself back to even for the tournament.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 04:42 PM

If Mickelson pars the 9th, he'll shoot 30 on the front.

A mother****ing 30.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 04:44 PM

Seriously, this is GOD MODE.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 05:00 PM

Well, Mickelson just bogeyed 9, one of the hardest holes on the course. Cards a 31, and he's the only guy on the course under par for his round.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 05:35 PM

Mickelson made an easy par on 10 and birdies 11 to play 8-11 -1.

That's a fabulous stretch of golf.

That was a really good pitch on 12. Those shots are so difficult.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 05:50 PM

Y.E. needs to par the next two holes to get back to bogey golf on the backside.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 06:05 PM

Phil just got ****ed by the poa on 13, costing him another birdie.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 06:08 PM

I love that the crowd groaned when Phil bagged his driver on 14.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 06:14 PM

14 isn't just a hard hole on this course, it's a hard hole in Tiger Woods. You can hit your driver super high to cut the dogleg off, but hitting and holding the green in two is quite difficult.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 06:21 PM

A little bit too much jizz on that one, but 12 feet for birdie on this hole is still a good look.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 06:24 PM

Y.E. Yang is having one of the worst nines I've ever seen a tour player have.

He might shoot 50.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 06:25 PM

This is excruciating.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 06:36 PM

Here's the question:

Could you play 10-14 in 9 over or better from these tees at Pebble?

I think as long as I hit my driver ok and putted respectably, I could shoot 7 over or so on those holes.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-18-2010 06:42 PM

Y.E. Yang may commit seppuku here.

This is one of the saddest stretches of golf I've ever seen.
