I, for one, am not a Pioli hater. But I have to admit his personnel decisions, so far, have been looking mostly illogical.

No way....even I know that JC is worth more than a 5!

Nevermind, just saw it........

So there it is. Now STFU about it.

Third down backs and change of pace guys are very valuable. There is no one who expected Charles to rush for 260 yards in a game, but I can damn sure tell you that there were several people who didn't want to sell him off for a late second day pick.

I've been as high on Charles as anyone on this site from the time he was a rookie, even if that ceiling was even higher than I'd imagined.

Hell, I had a disagreement with Mecca in the '08 draft thread about Felix Jones vs. Charles, arguing that Charles was the same kind of player and could be had later....turns out, Charles is better than Jones.

The only criticism I have ever levied against Charles is that he is unable to take the pounding of a full load across an entire NFL season.

Search for something else, you won't find it.

Oh, the irony.

Let's take a look at past history:

Everyone is on the block

Add in the fact that we traded two players before the deadline

Then add in the fact that Charles was languishing on the bench

Then add in the fact that Washington needed a RB b/c Portis was brain dead.

But, since Pioli has no history of trading players from prior regimes, like say Tank Tyler or Tyler Thigpen, the thought that he'd trade another backup is completely out of the ****ing question, especially when he said that everyone, sans Matt Delhomme was on the block.

And we are the ones who are blinded by emotion.

Right.

Soooo, because A happened, then B must be true without a doubt.

Using that logic, this particular source has been full of BS on almost all of his "inside reporting". Does it then not stand that he's probably wrong here too?

Saying that Charles was going to be the teams 3rd down back was just a statement of fact. The Chiefs had a starter at the time with a large contract -- Larry Johnson.

I think we need to turn the page on many of these debates.

The first year for the new regime did NOT go well. There's simply no getting around that. There were failures in the draft, FA, and talent evaluation. Game management was often a travesty.

That said, Pioli and Haley are going to be around in 2010. I'm hopeful they'll have learned from their mistakes, and I'm also ready to start evaluating new decisions from here on out.

Very good post Deez.

Does "third down back" = "buried on the depth chart"?

I've called him a 3rd down back as well, and still have concerns about what a full season of "feature back" pounding would do for him. It's good to see him be one of the guys to step up and grab his opportunity to do something. He's certainly exceeded what I think most anyone, including the coaches, expected. But that's usually the story in the NFL when guys aren't first rounders...

You have quite a way with words, and well, actually reading them.

Nowhere in that post does he claim that Charles was nothing more than a 3rd down back, or that he'd never be more than a 3rd down back, only that he would serve that purpose. Implying that he'd be a 3rd down back his rookie year. Nothing referencing the future.

Again, the post in question is from right after we drafted him.

Reading is fundamental.

I read it. Stating that a guy is going to be our third down back isn't really saying anything other than........he's going to be our third down back.

I don't recall a single person in here calling for Charles to be the starter opening day. I'm sick of people bitching just to bitch.

find another MF'ing team since you hate everything/anything to do with this one.

DaWolf 01-04-2010 12:52 PM

Hell, Dick Vermeil initially thought Priest Holmes was going to be a 3rd down back...
