It will be something like... plead guilty, prosecutor will recommend a sentence of (agreed upon term, likely 8-10 years would be my somewhat informed guess), and the judge will LIKELY follow the prosecutor's recommendation.

^ sometimes that sentence recommendation will be based on sentencing data from similar cases in the jurisdiction under current statutes.

If Ruggs' drug test comes back showing he was over the legal alcohol limit or - even worse - was under the influence of drugs... that offer is not going to be a sweetheart deal.

I suspect the team knows the results of the drug test and they're not positive for Ruggs, or would not have released him already.

No. In Nevada defendants who are charged with a crime have the constitutional right to a jury trial only if they are facing more than six (6) months in jail. Also, people charged with misdemeanor battery domestic violence in Nevada may have a jury trial.

Otherwise they are entitled to a Nevada “bench trial”, where their case is heard and decided by a judge rather than a jury.

That's actually pretty common. Case law has refined the right to a jury trial to apply to 'serious offenses' only. And most jurisdictions hold that to be 6+ months in prison (though certain kinds of significant fines could theoretically trigger it).

And in most states, a sentencing hearing is conducted by the judge rather than a jury (though my memory is that capital cases are decided by the jury).

So theoretically, if Ruggs plead no contest, he could skip straight to a sentencing hearing and avoid a jury outright. But at the sentencing hearing the prosecutor may still show a video like that in arguing for a harsher sentence and it could easily sway a judge.

Given how extreme the accident was, the guy could be found guilty of reckless driving resulting in a fatality even IF they can't establish he was impaired. And he would likely still end up with jail time for that. His attorneys would probably be wise to get a plea deal worked out and hope he can get 2-4 years in the poke. Let's say he pleas and gets 4 years - he would be out at 27. If he's still in shape, he'd probably need a year or so to get back into football condition but he could be ready to take a stab at a return at 28 years old.

With his speed, he could probably still stick around until 30-32 yrs old. That's a potential 4+ year career and enough time to re-create some semblance of a life going forward.

I really don't think he wants to go to the mattresses here. That puts some seriously ominous outcomes on the table for him.
