However, I cannot describe how loathsome the Philly fans are with enough emphasis. Cheering Master Allen almost getting brained with a fastball? What type of insipid pile of rat shit does something like that?

I went to 2006 Opening Day Cards/Phillies game and I was curious to see in person whether there was any truth to the perceptions. Right field was full of A-holes who made not only baseball "stupid" comments, but just ragging to rag. In my section alone I saw two fans ejected. One guy's girlfriend unrelated to the ejections became upset, and he said "This is what we do here."

That said, the majority of the fans were families like everywhere else. The difference is the level of aholishness that permeates throughout the stands in about a 1/3 of each section. I walked around the stadium the last 3 innings and it wasn't much different anywhere...although certainly stronger in right field. Of course Rolen was ripping them a new one that game which had to sting their tender manginas.

No but cheering every play does? You, the media and others here misrepresent the Philly sports fan because it's more convenient to think of them/us as the loud, crude bunch with a NY inferiority complex than as the passionate type who boo and cheer judiciously, and yes loudly. Helluva lot better than cheering blindly.

But then Phillie fans are at fault for generalizing Cards fans as the self-righteous, passionless type, so it's all good. Great series. Good luck. **** TLR.

You've got to be kidding, right? Cheering when Craig almost got his face taken off is just the action of a passionate fanbase? To quote the GQ article: "Over the years, Philadelphia fans have booed Santa Claus, their own star players and, most absurdly, the recipient of America's very first hand transplant, whose crime was dribbling in a ceremonial first pitch—thrown with his freshly transplanted hand. Boooo! Admittedly, there are some things fans have cheered. Like Michael Irvin's career-ending neck injury and a fan being tased on the outfield grass. Things reached their nadir last season, when Citizens Bank Park played host to arguably the most heinous incident in the history of sports: A drunken fan intentionally vomited on an 11-year-old girl."

And let us not forget battery night at the ballpark. Seriously, there is a reason the entire country thinks the Philly "fanbase" is a first rate collection of douchebags.

When you're listening for boos, you'll hear them anywhere. The difference is they write about it in Philadelphia. And after more than 50 years, if you don't know the reason why they booed Santa, then eff you for your ignorance and laziness. And seriously, you can't complain about the Craig pitch without sounding like a pussy; it's baseball, pure and simple. The pitcher was moving him off the plate and fans EVERYWHERE respond to that with a cheer. So you and the rest of the Cards fans need to get off your soapbox and kiss the Phillies feet for just allowing you to have a postseason to remember.

This has nothing to do with the Phillies as an organization, which is flush with class, professional players and management, and everything to do with a huge chunk of their fans, who are the largest group of miscreants in American sports.

I don't know why, but Philly sports seems to be an accretion disc for the most detestable scumbags to sully the inside of a sports venue.

If you need to have a jail and a courtroom in the bowels of your stadium, you've got a ****ing problem, and it's not the opposing fans pointing it out.

From what I've heard of the history the Eagles had their own version of suck for luck going in and won a late game which cost them a chance at the # 1 which I believe was OJ. They just weren't feeling very Christmassy.

They booed Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton on a regular basis and had a special story the the NFL films group about their criminal justice court on site. The film also described a section in the old vet where even the cops wouldn't go. The bullpens were just switched so the Phillie fans can have greater fun shouting obscenities at the other team and tossing the occassional beer in there.
