yeah, except for the fact they are two totally separate teams that play in separate cities, in different states, wear different colors, and have different owners, team staff, members...

They are the same thing. Except I like the Red Sox front office more. Other than that they are essentially equivalent now and have been for a few years.

Yankees $206 Million
Red Sox $162 Million
Hey, whatever.
Both will be on ESPN and Fox baseball broadcasts almost nightly from here on out this season. They're the "Quisp and Quake" of American League Baseball.
Speaking to 2003, if the Red Sox couldn't have A-Rod, the Yankees got him instead. Why? Because his contract was about to bankrupt the Texas Rangers.

How in the **** are they different? The only thing that used to separate the two was that Boston didn't have championship success or as big of a spending budget, and that Boston had a massive, largely lovable, underdog identity. Now? They're both good franchises, they're both capable of outspending the world. Boston has long ceased being the underdog to anything.

MIAdragon 08-09-2011 04:16 PM

Are the Mets, Cubs, White Sox Angles and Phillies "basically" the Red Sox? They are within 41 million of the Sox as that's the margin between the Sox and Yankees.

Ding ding ding, you nailed it. The Sox have never been close to the Yankees in spending. They are MUCH closer the the rest of the MLB when it comes to payroll. Its quite comical when people try to say they are the same thing.

Numbers will fluctuate from year to year. This is a general feeling we're talking about here. An atmosphere. An aura. This is how your franchise is perceived.

I get you but its dead wrong. Look at the numbers or "home grown" players. The Sox are nothing like the Yankees, not in how they pick up free agents or retain their own players. They do not have anything CLOSE to the same budget and really the only reason they do spend the money they do is to compete year in and year out in the AL East.

Red Sox stepped into a new perceived category when they traded (and signed) for Gonzalez and then outbid people for Carl Crawford. It was like they were building a fantasy team.

Plus, at this point, the Yankees actually have a more tolerable fanbase.

We traded 3 HIGHLY rated prospects for AG, I get you with the CC (To be honest Im not sure why the picked up Crawford) I dont get the Hate for the Sox when other teams that have the same payroll or higher get a pass, not that I give a shit.
