More from BA:

Quote:

Buddy Baumann, lhp, Royals

Born: Dec. 9, 1987. B-T: L-L. Ht.: 5-10. Wt.: 180. Drafted.: Missouri State, 2009 (7th round). Signed by: Scott Melvin.

When the Royals signed Baumann as a seventh-round pick in 2009, he projected as a three-pitch lefty whose savvy and low arm slot would allow him to succeed as a reliever with average stuff. That was what he had done at Missouri State, where he went 11-1, 3.23 as a junior. The savvy is still there and Baumann also has managed to increase his velocity, making him a more intriguing prospect. His fastball now sits at 88-92 mph and touches 94. He also throws an average slider and changeup.

Kansas City moved Baumann to the rotation in mid-June last year and he showed an aptitude for the new role by throwing five no-hit innings in his debut. Because of his arm slot, he's especially effective against lefties, who hit just .189/.270/.222 against him in 2010. Baumann's next assignment will be to Double-A Northwest Arkansas, where a loaded rotation likely will send him back to the bullpen.

He could move relatively quickly to the big leagues.

Lucas May, c, Royals

Born: Oct. 24, 1984. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-0. Wt.: 196. Drafted.: HS—Ballwin, Mo., 2003 (8th round). Signed by: Mitch Webster (Dodgers).

May is yet another in a long line of former infielders turned into catchers by the Dodgers. He doesn't have the upside of other Los Angeles conversions like Russell Martin and Carlos Santana, but the move behind the plate got May to the big leagues. The Royals promoted him last September, two months after acquiring him and righthander Elisaul Pimentel for Scott Podsednik at the trade deadline.

May profiles as a backup catcher. He's a hard worker with better athleticism than most catchers and a line-drive swing. His hitting ability and power are fringy, but enough for a No. 2 backstop. Behind the plate, May has improved to where he's a solid receiver. His arm is one of his best assets, but he's not consistent with his throwing mechanics. He'll rip off a 1.9-second pop time occasionally, but he usually sits at 2.0-2.05 seconds and threw out just 19 percent of basestealers last season.

In a system loaded with prospects at most positions, May is positioned well to compete for a spot on the Royals' Opening Day roster. He doesn't have much long-term upside, but he has enough tools to have a lengthy career as a backup.

The Royals sign Pedro Feliz

The Kansas City Royals have the best farm system in all of baseball. The big club though? Let’s just say that it hasn’t improved much this winter. Dayton Moore has signed third baseman Pedro Feliz to a minor league contract.

It’s not big money — only a million bucks if he makes the team and earns all of his incentives — and signing a bad player to a one-year deal is way better than the Royals’ old habit of signing bad players to multi-year deals. But still Feliz hit a mere .218/.240/.293 with the Astros and Cardinals last season. Jeff Francoeur is going to watch Feliz hit and says “dude … I mean, dude.”

Royals invite Swampscott's Dwyer to camp
By Joyce Erekson / The Daily Item

Swampscott's Chris Dwyer is hopping on a plane for Arizona Saturday and it's not just to escape the weather..

Dwyer, who played Double A ball for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals last summer, will attend the Kansas City Royals spring training camp as a non-rostered invitee. The Royals are the pa rent club of the Naturals.

"It's definitely exciting," Dwyer said. "Going to a Major League camp and being part of it."

Dwyer, a 6-3, 201-pound lefty, attended Salisbury Prep School after attending St. Mary's High.School. He was drafted in the 36th round by the New York Yankees, but opted for Clemson and in 2009, he was the Royals fourth round of the First-Year Player Draft. He started the season last year with the Wilmington Blue Rocks (High A) of the Carolina League and was called up to the Double-A Naturals (Texas League) during the season.

Prior to getting called up, Dwyer had thrown six scoreless innings for the Blue Rocks. Five days later, after a 20-hour ride from Delaware to Arkansas, he tossed five scoreless innings in his Double-A debut.

Dwyer, who found out in January that he was going to spring training, had a 6-3 record with Wilmington and a 2.99 earned run average. He was 2-1 with the Naturals with a 3.06 ERA.

Although he won't know whether he'll be playing Double-A or Triple A next season for some time, Dwyer will likely be in Kansas City on opening day because the Double A team will be playing the Triple A team prior to the Royals game.

Dwyer said he has spent the last few months visiting with family and friends and working out as much as possible.

"I've been hanging out, enjoying the off-season because once everything gets going, there isn't any time to anything," Dwyer said.

Life in the Texas League means lots of long bus rides, the longest being a 14-hour hop to San Antonio, Dwyer said, adding that the games draw good crowds (6,000-7,000 fans).

Dwyer said his family was able to see him play a couple of times last summer when he was in Wilmington, but it was much tougher for them to get to Arkansas. His sister, Lindsay, is now an investment banker in San Francisco and his sister Lexi works for Boston College. Both were excellent soccer players at Swampscott High and in college. Lindsay went to Williams and Lexi to Trinity.

The Naturals are located in Springdale, Arkansas, and although he didn't know quite what to expect, Dwyer said Arkansas is actually very nice and there's a lot to do.

Why not get Lastings Milledge instead?

You guys do realize that Feliz 1) is not guaranteed a contract, and 2) at best is a cheap placeholder for Moustakas, right?

At best he provides depth off the bench.

He couldn't hit shit this year. His defense is okay.

That's why he costs $800,000 and not $5MM. And up until last year he has been worth around 20+ runs per year.

Really? I thought he was our 3BotF......

Well, No shit.

Wasn't there a guy in the morgue that was at least lukewarm instead of Peter Happy? I mean, seriously!

Well if you know all of that, WTF are you complaining about?

He is depth off the bench, period. Every team has players like this - guys that can do one thing well but are mediocre overall - sitting on the bench ready to play in spot situations.

We have an entire major league roster full of Peter Happy's.

We do? Who?

Betemit's defense is garbage and Aviles profiles better at 2nd (plus his arm might not be back to 100% after TJ surgery).
