International grosses. MIB 3 was a disappointment here in the US (178 million), but it grossed $454 million internationally. Sony is banking on a larger international gross to make up for a lackluster US performance. Studios do not talk much about international grosses, or the fact that the international markets have increased greatly in the last 15-20 years. A movie can bomb in the states, and still be able to break-even based on a strong international gross. (The Golden Compass from five/six years ago is a prime example, it bombed in the US, making only 70 million, but made over 300 million overseas, which helped make up for the 180 million spent to make it.)
