my advice:

1) don't admit you hate IT and you're just going back temporarily. Make up some bullshit about how you miss it and flying wasn't for you.

2) There are plenty of us who grab beers after work and hang out. You probably have just been stuck working in shitty places. If you can afford to, be picky about where you work.

Oh I will, my hope is they have an airplane, it is a pretty big company here in OKC.... They are looking for a SR Net Admin.... Somehting I can do in my sleep....

I am hoping they will have an airplane so I can work my way into that department from the IT department...

A+ cert is very over rated....

Honestly, when I was hiring people, I avoided all those certs and wouldnt hire people based on papers, but based on abilities and personality.

I just started my associates degree program, and have heard different stories about guys just having a 2 yr degree. In general how much do you guys think I start out making as a yearly salary

my guess is upper 20's to low 30's......

I would go ahead and get the BS before I went into the industry... Gives you a massive leg up on 75% of the people you compete with...

You have got to pound the pavement. Call non profits, see if the local junior college needs help desk support, whatever. You have to stand out.
Ceritfications will help you with word searchs in job databases, HR, some non-technical managers, but in the real world they don't mean chit.

I am not really nervous, but more sick to my stomach than anything. I thought once I left that shit, I would never have to look back... Well thanks to the economy the flying industry is basically shit plus I cant get even get a sniff with my flight hours for a flying job. Just about everyone is laying off pilots right and left.

So instead of starving my family to death I have sucked up my pride and sent out some resumes. How can someone get excited about something the despise so badly?

Any thoughts? I know I need to keep things rolling and help relieve some of the stress from the wife and family. That what is important.

Good luck man. You've put in a lot of time, and effort in your flying; hopefully this is just temporary and you can get back in it when this economy pick up again.

It'll be tough - getting back into something you hated in the first place etc. I am/was there. Definitely not fun. Just try to not let it get to you once you're back in the IT world etc. That's what I have to do/continually work on doing (albeit in a different industry).

Good luck man. It'll work out.

God! I know the fuggin feeling. I have a 2 bosses that's continually checking internet usage and tracking emails. It's so bad that 1 has resorted to waking up peoples black screens (by moving the mouse) to see what windows they have open. I got offered a company phone and told them to shove it up their ass. No way they're gonna give me a phone with no texting capabilities and they keep track of everything you do with it. I have a feeling they're upset because I use my personal phone for work and they can't track my txts which is what I'm left with for entertainment since they're now monitoring Inet usage.

Then there's the geeks. Only one "grab a beer" person and she's a sorority type female. I'm trying to inch my way out of IT as well. Must get things worked out in order to do so but the micromanaging is slowly taking me there.

True dat but once you get real world experience and verifiable refrences, degrees are not important, unless you want to get into management.

vailpass 10-22-2009 06:07 PM

You're doing what you have to do to make ends meet, an honorable pursuit unertaken by many before you. If you have to do it you can either hate it or choose to accept it and make the best of it while you have your eyes open for something better. The latter makes you more fun when you get home.
As does stopping off for a toddy or three after work.

FWIW: help desk people are the coolest in IT. The higher ups are so into their self help seminars and books it's rediculous.

Designed by AriChiefs, who is also pretty advanced in tech skills. Would be a good resource also.
