in a nutshell, what's the difference between FS and SS?

A Free Safety is your cover (or "pass") safety. He's generally not assigned a particular player (or really even area, save 'deep') and is "free" to react to the play and go where the play goes. A Strong Safety is your safety on the tight-end side... He's your "run" safety. He needs to be a strong tackler and be able to shed blocks, as obviously, most teams will run to the strong side where there is an extra blocker (the te). Free safety = pass safety Strong safety = run safety |
Works the same way with strong and weak side linebackers too...

I'm glad Teicher just figured this out. I swear the Chiefs fans are smarter than both the media and front office.

Yeah, it is kinda funny that Teicher is just now writing an article about this. Chiefs fans on this bb have been discussing this exact problem for years.
About NE, I would say yes, their front 7 is exceptional. But I would also say that their 2 safeties have played better than our starting 2 safeties, as well. |

I think both of your safeties are too slow. The strong safety can get away with being slow if he's got good instincts off the snap and can put himself in position to make a play. But you want someone with wheels at FS, and you guys haven't had that since before Woods broke his leg (despite his "mysterious" (cough*bogus*cough) Pro Bowl appearance last year). |
