Dante Alighieri-the poet

What about Langston Hughes, Sir Winston Churchhill, Vincent Van Gogh, Robert Frost?

In second grade, our teacher made our class memorize "The Swing" by Robert Louis Stevenson. I've grown to love his poetry, as well as poetry in general, ever since. We were the only class that did that. We went over to the other second grade class and recited it.

Just Van Gogh. Give the kid a break, he's not even in middle school yet! Btw, I don't even know who Langston Hughes is.

It came up in conversation with one of the receivers I deal with, and he didn't know the correct answer.

So, as I continued through my day, I asked others, and the only person to get it right was a naturalized citizen.

Are we, as a society, really this ignorant?

I shouldn't say anything- I thought James Blunt was a girl-lol a common mistake evidently.

When it comes to TV and all these reality shows, hip hop, pop music, rap, I have limited knowledge.

Yeah, well I bet he knows who Will Ferrell is. And that would be a sign of...BAD PARENTING!

I don't listen to music.
I had never heard of James Blunt until this thread.

I was just naming a few people that have came up in conversation, not trying to stump your kid-lol

Langston Hughes was a black poet.

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken winged bird
That cannot fly.

Lucky you-now you won't have to burn your eardrums out with gasoline and a match.

How do you like to go up in a swing
Up in the air so blue
Oh I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do

I should be more clear.

With some exceptions, I don't like contemporary music.

I haven't really liked music created in most of my lifetime.

I like 50's Rock and Roll.
Music from the era prior to that, Frank Sinatra, big band, etc.

I also like some classical.

I simply can't listen to contemporary music.

Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
Rivers and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside—

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown—
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!
