Croyle has targets. He's got Bowe, Gonzo, and LJ/Smith when healthy.

What he doesn't have is a full playbook or offensive line yet. Not his fault...

morphius 12-03-2007 11:34 AM

I wasn't aware that I was supposed to give up on him.

talastan 12-03-2007 12:08 PM

No one here has given up on Brodie. Everyone is just frustrated that Herm/Carl/Solari, or Whoever, has him playing with his throwing arm tied behind his back. Brodie is a deep vertical passing QB. You can't make use of his talents if he's on his back all game long. An O line suited more to the power running - clock control game Herm likes will go a long way to helping keep Croyle in the game.

Look at Derek Anderson and the Browns. They were OK on offense last season, but then they shore up that LT spot and all of a sudden Derek Anderson is the next star of the NFL and the Browns-THE BROWNS--are teaing up the league. Whatever. He just finally had time to throw.

We could be that type of offense, but it'd take a LOT of work/luck.

Joe Thomas - elite LT prospect, one of the best I've seen personally ... Hope and pray we get someone who's perhaps 70% as good as him.

Steinbach - elite guard, high-priced FA ... I don't like our chances.

Shaffer - decent RT, high-priced FA ... not sure we can even get someone of his caliber in this offseason

Winslow - Gonzalez

Edwards - Bowe

Jurevicius - we really need a decent No. 2 threat

Anderson - I'm not extremely high on Anderson and feel he's more of a system QB, but can Brodie be that guy? Maybe ... as I said, a lot of luck is involved, too.

You're asking a lot to be the Browns. They accomplished that over two years, predominantly, with a lot of money spent and two top-three picks. We won't even have one.

Not really.

Edwards, Winslow and Anderson were all there prior to this season. Jurevicius is an OK reciever but is benefiting more from single coverage IMO.

THE biggest difference in the Browns last year and this year is Thomas and Stienbach both of whom were aquired last season.

You don't think this offense would be SIGNIFICANTLY better with a line of:

LT--Draft choice the caliber of Thomas
LG-Waters
Center-Weigmann
RG-Solid FA the caliber of Steinbach
RT-McIntosh

Add in another year's seasoning for Croyle and a MUCH better backfield and they may not approach the Browns (after all, Herm is still the coach) but the performance would like be night and day IMO.

I think we need to look in FA or trade one of our 9000 draft picks for a left tackle. Experience really counts in that position. I don't know if anyone will be available or if a trade deal can be worked out, though. But if we can get that done, we then see how BPA works out in the draft. If we don't pick up any players for the right side of the line, we enter the FA market for those needs.

If we draft the oline, we push back our turnaround by, perhaps, years.

I'll give up on Herm, but not Crodie, I mean Broyle, I mean..

penchief 12-03-2007 03:05 PM

I think Croyle has the goods. That said, I thought Thigpen looked better than Huard yesterday. Pass plays are so slow in developing with Huard and he's so easy to read. If he's not getting sacked or intercepted, his passes are getting knocked down at the line of scrimmage. I swear it seemed like he had three passes on one drive knocked down within a matter of a half-dozen plays.

When Thigpen came in it seemed like he made quicker decisions and got rid of the ball a lot quicker. Both he and Croyle are way ahead of Huard when it comes to that. Too bad Bowe dropped the nice sideline pass that Thigpen made.

That's Mecca the doomsayer for ya. I think Brodie has one of the toughest mentalities that I've seen in a young QB in a long time. I know I'm biased but I think this kid with a solid O-line is the guy to take us to the promised land. Provided Herm doesn't leash him up, and gets an OC that can gameplan one stinking game!! :#

Chris Meck 12-03-2007 04:05 PM

yep. It's a bruised kidney, dude. That's a freak thing.

It's that Joe Montana air about him

Chris Meck 12-03-2007 05:34 PM

He doesn't get ruffled. That's the thing.

There's no reason to give up on Brodie Croyle. The NFL has always been hard on rookie quarterbacks. The mental preparation that it takes to learn an NFL playbook takes time to develop. Croyle's in a professional sport in which speed and size cause an impact.

A huge part of the Patriots and Cowboys success is their offensive line. Without a line to protect him, how could a good quarterback prove he can make all of the difference to his team?

In the ’80s, Giants GM George Young pushed the "Planet Theory on Bill Parcells . To Young's way of thinking there are only so many big huge, athletic people on the planet, and if you find one in the draft take him. If you have more of them than your opponent, you’ve got the edge.
These planets let Parcells keep New York’s schemes simple. They believed they were the more physical team and could wear you down by game’s end. It Parcells to work in younger players faster on offense and defense.
If you are a Giants fan, you are undoubtedly wishing that Eli Manning had a good offensive line. Then and only then will I know if he may be the quarterback of the future. There is no question, Croyle deserves the same.
