I thought we were trying to break away from the stigma of the "last stop before retirement" that we developed over the last several years.

Signing Coles would be counter-productive to the goals of the team right now in my opinion.

And just because so and so was released by some other team doesn not mean that he should automaitcally warrant a contract or even necessarily a look at by the Chiefs.

Brace yourself, because Pioli will probably try signing more than one grizzled veteran to the Chiefs.

Vet min IMO only. If Pioli could manage it like they did with the Moss arrangement, only w/o draft picks then I'd be fine for him to play opposite of Bowe and then look to next year's draft for Coles' replacement.

At some point we need to sign some players. We have so many holes, and it isn't possible to fill them all through the draft immediately. Whether it's a rookie QB or Thigpen, we will need options at WR and Coles can still play. Haley's offense is predicated on having WRs that can stretch the field, so I would say a guy like Coles makes a lot of sense for a couple years until we can find a younger option.

Like all defensive FAs will have to go through Krummie's slap test
the offensive FAs will have to through Thiggies jump/crouch test

What the hell is a grizzled veteran?

Basileus777 02-25-2009 04:38 PM

Coles can't stretch the field, the guy is more of a possession receiver. He isn't all that good at getting separation.

Exactly. Signing him wouldn't have the same cap impact that it had when we handed out stupid contracts to Kendrell Bell, Surtain, etc....I think it would be helpful. It's not like we'd be building the team around Coles.

Coles can't buy a house in Leawood
like he's got back east
there's just not that much wood and stone

As stated above, if he came for Vet League Minimum, perhaps with some incentive bonuses attached I wouldnt see it as horrible. But chances are he will come at a much heavier price tag than that.

Coles is a good stop gap until we can get a young deep threat in the draft.

And again, so could P. Surtain and Ty Law when the Chiefs picked them up. Or at least eveyone thought. Surtain at best was serviceable here and there, but never worth what was traded for and paid to him. And well, Ty Law was a joke and a half.

And I'm not arguing that the Chiefs could use a few good recievers. Bowe has the skills, unless the ball is thrown right into the numbers on his chest, and the others, well, we have other recievers on the team?

I just think Coles is not the player he used to be. He isn't going to stretch the field, and I don't really think he is an over the middle kind of guy. I really just believe it will be like watching the Surtain experiment all over again, just on he opposite side of the ball.

That's pretty much what he's always been. He had some speed earlier in his career, but he was never used primarily in deep patterns.

And the Surtain comparison is pretty ****ing weak. We wouldn't be trading away a draft pick or giving Coles a big contract to come here.

He had 70 catches and 7 TDs last year.

Good luck getting that from any other receiver on the Chiefs right now.

Coles lives in Jax. They need a WR more than anybody...
