The thing that amazes me about this is so many fans are mad because Alex Smith was acquired, and they think he's useless, yet were ready to proclaim Geno Smith the franchise savior.
Who is Geno Smith's more direct NFL comparison? Alex Smith.
Coming out of college, they were basically the same guy, except Alex has a great deal of experience, playing in every single offensive system out there because the 49ers under Nolan and Singletary went through OC's like tic-tacs. He's very celebral, great at running the no-huddle and 2 minute offense, he'll be playing within the offense, won't force throws, will protect the ball and make plays when they are there.
As far as Reid goes, he loves Smith and that should be very telling. Reid is a regarded QB guru, if he's really high on Smith, that should be considered a very good sign.
Alternatively, if Reid just sat through the Combine, and decided to make this move now, that's a tremendous indictment of the lack of QB talent in this draft, at least early on. Reaching for someone like Geno Smith, who, let's face it, would be a 2nd rounder in most other drafts, doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
If they can re-sign Albert then they can take someone like Floyd or trade down and take another WR like Patterson. I expect Reid to look for a QB in the 3rd or 4th and that will be the guy to sit behind Alex Smith for 2-3 years and develop into a full-fledged homegrown starting QB. All in all, the Chiefs are in a better position than they were at the end of the season.
Cassell is gone, and the new QB is someone that completed 70% of his passes the previous season.
