Seems golden retrievers are the most prone. Every one I've known has died of cancer and the first tumors always seem to appear on the hind legs. :(

I've wondered about this. my last two dogs...one a shepherd and one a bull mastiff...both died from lymphoma at age 7-ish. wtf? when I was younger....none of my dogs got cancer. my current dog has a lump on his side....freaked me out cause I'm gunshy now...vet said it's nothing.

gotta be a sign-o-the-times. there's gotta be something to it scientifically.
wonder what national statistics look like now compared to say 1965-ish....I doubt such things are even tracked.

He is almost 8 yrs this started about a month ago and vet has been saying it might cancer since then. But since he is a pure breed basset we hoped for the best and it was only a sprained knee. My wife decided to spend the money to figure out if this was something else last week. I didn't know that at least bassets have lymph nodes in their back legs around their knee. The vet wants to remove it and get it tested and do x-rays to see if it has spread. So far he is in no pain just limping on 3 legs. Decisions, decisions. So far this is the most expensive dog I have ever had since childhood, just in the last month. My last dog was a lab and he went down hill fast he was only around 10 yrs.

Your Dog is a part of your Family. Sorry to hear it B.

Sorry to hear that, bud. Cancer is a terrible disease that has no sympathy for anybody or anything.

Rasputin 05-16-2013 07:02 PM

Best wishes on the treatment. Hope it works out and he gets healthy again.

He is still fighting at this point. But don't know for how much longer. I have him several things to fight this. But the wife is not back till sunday because of her hours

Damn. I'm sorry man. Dogs rule. I would (will) be crushed if (when) something happens to the Chief dog.

AussieChiefsFan 05-16-2013 08:37 PM

Sorry man, thats harrible.

Braincase 05-16-2013 08:37 PM

That sucks, man. Hope they have found a way to treat your dog's pain. Peace with you, brother.

Sorry to hear about doggie. That really sucks. Just make him as comfy as you can.

He isn't doing good.

Been there with a few of my pooches over the years. I pulled the trigger on taking them to the vet and having them painlessly put to sleep, rather than see them suffer. The animal's needs to stop suffering were greater than my need to selfishly keep them around.

This. We decided a similar fate with my parents dog Rambo.

All the best bevischief.

Yeah... something seems fishy about the number of young dogs succumbing to lymphoma. I've had two border collies die from it right around age 7 & my neighbor down the block had the exact thing happen to his golden. Damn good dogs, too. Pisses me off bigtime that they went so early.

Earthling 05-21-2013 12:34 AM

Totally sucks. Sorry to hear.
