So another idea the NFL would never do: Make players who are re-signed by their team from the previous year count against the cap at 75% of their standard cap figure. This should increase player retention so fans can actually root for their players and buy their jerseys without worrying about them running off to another team.

Did they tank like Indy? Is tanking an AFCS specialty?

This is pretty close to the actual 2013 draft order. It's just more accurate to prevent teams like the Texans from taking the #1 overall spot.

Had it been in place last year, the Chiefs would have probably benefitted from not being forced into picking for positional value, since they wouldn't have had the #1 overall pick.

I think it's a good thing, anyway.

Zach Lowe wrote an entire article about this related to the NBA Draft on Grantland about two weeks ago.

How long does it take to construct one of these kinds of posts? Impressive.

DaFace 01-06-2014 04:22 PM

I like it. It'll never happen, but I like it.

The Franchise 01-06-2014 04:25 PM

The Rams would own the 5th and 7th picks. Damn.

The Franchise 01-06-2014 04:26 PM

So how would you handle teams that go from 2 years of playoffs to one shitty year? Do you still include the total of 3 years? Basically they just get moved way to the back of the line, i.e. #20?

Correct. Because in theory they're not as bad as a team that has not made the playoffs two years in a row and still has a shitty record.

FWIW, the .5x,1x,2x method gives you this order with weighted average number of wins.

4.t Houston 6.333
6.t Tampa 6.667
6.t Buffalo 6.667
8. Detroit 7
9. Minnesota 7.167
10. Tennessee 7.667
11. St Loser 8.167
12. Miami 8.667

And the best part of this is that once the teams who got that extra boost make the postseason, their benefits are cut off. A team that starts from nothing but puts together two pretty damn good draft classes in back-to-back years is now cut off from the system once they can walk on their own. The very year they make the playoffs, those terrible records the two previous years don't matter. They're big boys, and now they have to fend for themselves.

I can just imagine a scenario where a team has been shit for two years. They've hired a new coach, drafted a few young pieces, and are on the verge. With a few FA moves, they could be a legit wild card contender.
Instead of doing that, though, they decide the missing piece is at the top of the next draft, and sign below avg FAs to get to the salary floor, and tank the season in hopes of getting Andrew Luck.
It's essentially the same as it is now, but with that extra year.
Not a huge problem, but I could see that scenario.
