Now I do agree, people going under the speed limit, not passing anyone, have no real reason to be in the left lane. But the guy going ten over in the left lane is really a bigger asshole than the guy going 20 over, honking at you, riding your bumper 10 inches away? Usually, it is shared liability in these instances, but most of the time the person making the left turn on the red light is at fault. If they are making the left turn on the expiring yellow light they are almost solely at fault. You are mistaken. If driving schools are teaching it this way, they are wrong plain and simple.

You sit there and sit there, no opening in sight, and then the light starts to turn yellow. Still no opening. It turns red, and now you are shit out of luck. If you would have stopped and waited back before entering the intersection you wouldn't have put yourself in this predicament. Now, you are forced to make your left turn while the light is red. And bam! You are T-boned by another vehicle. You claim the other person is solely at fault, but the reality is you are both at fault, and you are at fault more than the other guy. Not only did you run a red light, you also failed to yield while making a left hand turn.
