Redskins acquire QB Alex Smith from Chiefs for CB Kendall Fuller, 2018 3rd-round pick

It's currently unknown what the Chiefs will be receiving for trading Alex Smith to the Redskins. Ian Rapoport is saying that this deal is for "picks and a player." Which picks and which player will obviously determine how good of a trade this is for both teams, but I can't imagine Kansas City being on the losing end of this trade.

The Chiefs had to move on from Smith. He's been a good quarterback for them, but never really a great one capable of leading a team deep into the playoffs. Smith turns 34 in May and will begin declining shortly. Kansas City spent last year's first-round pick on Patrick Mahomes, and by the way he played in Week 17 versus Denver's defense, it appears as though he's ready to be the starter. Thus, it's good that the Chiefs are going to move forward with him in 2018. The fact that they're getting resources for Smith is the cherry on top.

As for the Redskins, it's difficult to understand what they're doing. By acquiring Smith, it's basically official that Kirk Cousins won't be back next year. Cousins has been Washington's best quarterback since Joe Theismann, so why allow him to leave, especially if it's for a 34-year-old veteran quarterback with no track record of winning in the playoffs? This trade will be even worse for the Redskins if they surrendered significant resources. Stay tuned for a more definitive grade, plus a poll once we learn what the compensation was.

Update: The "picks and a player" turned out to be a third-round pick and cornerback Kendall Fuller. The selection is a nice one, as the Chiefs don't have a first-rounder this year, so they need more resources to fix their defense. Fuller, meanwhile, is an excellent acquisition. He was terrific as Washington's slot cornerback last year. This fills a huge need for the Chiefs, whose secondary was awful last season outside of Marcus Peters.

The Chiefs are getting an A+ for this. For the Redskins, this is a disaster. They downgraded at quarterback, and to do so, they gave up a talented cornerback and a third-round pick. This is so dumb. When I heard "pick and a player," I assumed it was some backup and a sixth-round choice, or something. I never imagined the Redskins would give up so much to get older and worse at quarterback. I don't understand what the hell they are doing.

Yesterday, he dragged another poor unsuspecting soul into the basement to give then the Buffalo Bill treatment and we escaped while he was otherwise occupied.

It sucks knowing all the terrible things that he is gonna do to them but after 5 years... better then than us.

I don't disagree with any of this.

Additionally, I had completely forgotten about their string of Super Bowl appearances in the 80's and 90's. I'd be upset if my team hadn't made it back to the big game in almost 30 years, but then I remembered to which franchise my wagon is hooked and that we haven't seen this team win anything that mattered since the Nixon Administration. I have no problem unshackling the 216 pound weight around our neck only to dump it on another unlucky, drowning soul. Thanks for everything and see you in the funny papers, Washington.

We are a worse team today than we were yesterday.

A good front office figures out how to take the next step and get better, realizing that the end goal is a Super Bowl win.

Our front office is content to try and tread water while adding more hurdles, less talent, and question marks at more positions than before.

Staying pat isn't the goal. Going 50/50 with less talent doesn't prove you are a smart franchise. it proves your too stupid to know what the point of running a team is.

Bruce thinks getting similar output to last season with less resources counts as a win. It doesn't. It's just a unnecessary re-arrangement that ends in a different way to lose and stay irrelevant.

Their fanbase's immune system for mediocrity seems to be at least semi-resilient. Maybe they catch a break, or maybe they're crowdfunding banners flying over their stadium in two years.

Seriously, have you ever watched Alex Smith play football? There is nothing in the world Alex Smith loves throwing more than a screen pass to a goddamn tight end.

I'm honestly surprised that Fat Andy is letting Smith go, because there is no coach in football who loves calling a wide receiver screen on third and eight more than Andy Reid. And Alex Smith was designed by God himself to throw a wide receiver screen on third and eight.

Is Chris Thompson still on the team? Because if he is, he's going to lead the league in receptions next year.

I posted this elsewhere but it pretty much sums up my feelings now:

It's just embarrasing.

Aren't people just tired of wasting time and money being fans of a thoughless, hateful organization run by scumbags who have the second fault of also being ignorant and arrogant half-wits?

I'm tired of supporting this garbage. It's a total embarrassment being a fan of this team. And I sure as hell don't plan on indoctrinating my 1 year old in the fandom of a hopeless franchise run by idiotic scumbags. I've been contemplating a purchase of a Miracle on Ice framed photograph, or perhaps, a Framed Photograph of Donovan's famous winner against Slovenia in 2010. I want my house to be one filled with hope and promise and possibility for my son. The Redskins are bad enough, and that fandom is only compounded in misery by the presence of the choking caps and nats, and forever mediocre or worse Boulez.

I'm just tired of watching other teams learn from mistakes, hire the innovative and wise, and as a result of these choices end up with beautiful moments that can be celebrated. It's been decades since D.C. sports teams have provided any of us with any of that. I'm pretty much fill to the brim with the kind of self-loathing misery that these teams enforce by dictate on their own fans by fiat. Sick to death of it.

They've done absolutely NOTHING to deserve our loyalty and indeed, ritually punish us on an annual basis for our committment to such misguided loyalty. I'm beyond over it.

Anyone who cheers for a team that Alex Smith has played for knows the hopeless feeling. It's late in the third. It's 20-10. It's third and seven at your own 45. Smith drops back. Complete! To the fullback for five yards. And here comes the punt team.

Alex Smith will make you want to hang yourself by week eight, despite the fact that you are 5-3 and he has thrown one interception. It's a remarkable talent.

And what would you have done instead?

You weren’t asking me, but...

Trade anyone but Fuller.

Offer a higher draft pick or an additional future one.

Better still, grab a FA qb and not lose a pick or stud player.

More roll with McCoy

Draft a qb.

All of the above.

I don’t see how anyone can look at this and think our FO looks like anything but chumps... and that’s not Factoring in how they screwed things up with our franchise qb... something no other teams do.

Would have much rather just stuck with Colt and let Kirk walk. That gives you so much more freedom with free agents and picks. Now we will be stuck in 6-8 win seasons for the next three years and we lost our ability to sign more free agents and get better draft picks. Oh and we lost a very promising corner. This is a horrendous trade.

The Redskins went from having Norman, Breeland and Fuller....to having Norman. They're going to have overpay Breeland now to keep him.

gblowfish 01-31-2018 11:20 AM

I've got a friend named Ed who lives outside DC. He emailed me last night. He's livid, because of giving up Fuller. Plus, he was sending me snarky emails all this last season every time Alex would **** up. I told him, "Get ready for four years of six yard passes on third and nine."
