I've been saying that they should tie his salary to a % of the cap. That way he's always the highest paid QB in case QB salaries rocket up in the new CBA or in 2-3 years the NFL goes full exception for the QB salary.
But, if shit happens and the cap goes down for whatever reason, he still gets last years higher salary guaranteed. Like the common consensus, I agree, both parties are waiting until the new TV deals are done. |

The Chiefs had a truncated offseason due to the Super Bowl and with the virus causing issues, haven't needed to focus on Jones because the deadline to negotiate is still 10 weeks away. |
So no extension this year? Does he get more money this year? Or just the 25 in 2021?

Hi, dumbass checking in...what exactly IS the 5th year option, what does it mean? You basically just wait till he's in his 5th year to do a deal? Why is that an option?
I'm so ****ing dumb... |

No worries. No one has reported or even rumor mongered anything but that both the Chiefs and Mahomes want a long term contract. |

Players drafted in rounds two or lower have a max length of their first contract of four years. Contracts for first rounders include an option where the team can extend it to a fifth year without any other negotiation. The formula for the salary is a weird formula based on where they were picked. It's kind of like the franchise tag - it's a big payday for the player, but it's only good for a year. Functionally, this means that Pat will play for the Chiefs next year on a high, but not record breaking contract. I'm not 100% clear on whether we can now cancel the fifth-year and replace it with a different contract. I think the answer is yes, but there might be some other weird stuff with it. In short, this doesn't matter that much, but it makes 100% sure that he's not gonna be a free agent after 2020-21. |

For what it's worth, Spotrac has the value of Pat's contract in 2021-22 as $24,837,000 due to the fifth-year option.
