Plus i 'punish myself' for my sins by going to the gym 3-4 days a week.
I use the stair stepper 30 minutes plus working out.

People are taken back when they see me light one up if they don't know me.

Give it up Fraz, it's just not worth it. Cigarettes are great, I smoke 50 of them per day. Man, they are satisfying. There really is no sense in torturing yourself since you'll start again anyway. You will get even fatter and it will overwork your heart and you'll die before you're fifty. I'm 60 and in great health. I've been smoking heavily for 45 years.

I've seen people smoke for decades on end and do fine. Others will have problems early. You never know. Be like me and just pick and choose when to smoke.
But don't let it rule you.

Haven't had a cigarette since last night. I've quit several times in the past, sometimes for up to three months - quitting ain't the problem - it's staying quit that kicks my ass.

Any advice on non-smoking methods/products or encouragement would be appreciated.

Nicotine gum worked for me. I used smaller amounts than the guidelines on the package (mainly because that stuff is expensive and tastes like someone crapped in your mouth) and was able to quit a bit faster than normal.

That sounds a bit like Burgess Meredith in Grumpier Old Men telling Jack Lemmon how he got to be 95 years old. ROFL

Listen to your elders or you may not ever be one yourself. Fraz is shocking his system by withholding vitamin N (nicotine). It can have serious results.

Meredith: I wake up in the morning and smoke a cigarette. Then for breakfast I eat 3 strips of BACON. And for lunch, I have a bacon sandwich. And for a midday snack......

Lemmon: ...Bacon......

Meredith: BACON. A whole damned plate. And I usually drink my dinner.

Hang in there, Tim. And certainly don't listen to Skip.

KCChiefsMan 08-30-2005 09:05 PM

I'm on Day 5 since I quit smoking last Thursday. I smoked about a pack a day and I smoked over 2 packs on last Wednesday because I had a few friends over and we drank and woke up the next morning with a bad sinus infection that I believe was caused by the smoking and inhaling a lot of second hand smoke at the same time. So I decided to quit! I haven't smoked a cigarette since and I just hope I don't start up again!

Don't listen to him KcChiefsman. If you want to quit you can. but it ain't gonna be easy if you got your buds coming over blowing smoke in your face. Give that a rest for a month or so build up your intolerance to smoke.

I have a questions to the smokers here, how long did it take you guys to get addicted? If the question makes no sense, you don't have to answer it. I started smoking a little some time ago, and I'm afraid of getting addicted...

Hang in there bud, it will be worth it. I quit chewing 2 months ago after several years of that nasty habit. It's a bitch at first, but got easier every week.

Its been 6 1/2 months now. I'm fine and haven't had a smoke since I tried three drags off that one on the second day and couldn't finish it. Never wanted another one.

I just chew regular gum. Its the oral fixation of doing something with your mouth, IMO, not the nicotine itself. I think the patch and the special gum and all that other bullshit is just a racket. If you want to quit, just do it.

Good luck.

What would happen in month 3?

I mean why wouldnt you just stay quit after that point?

go bo 03-07-2006 12:47 PM

good deal, man...

stay with it...

even one lousy puff can get you back on the road to smoking...

you have to think of it like being an alcoholic...

you just can't handle even one drink/smoke so you have to not smoke even a little bit - stay strong...

and always carry a stick of nicorette with you (i had to for almost a year, for those times when you'd really really like to have a smoke)...

keep up the good work and use that money for something good, like a future vacation or a wide screen tv (ok, you probably won't save up that mch)...

:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

plbrdude 03-07-2006 12:48 PM

one time i had quit for about 6 months and then i lit my wife's cigarette a few times and i noticed that i had started closing the door when she smoked (to keep the smoke in)...

over about a month or so, i was smoking a "little bit" and by two months i was back up to 2 - 3 packs a day...

Altoids as replacements.

jcl-kcfan2 03-07-2006 01:15 PM

Trouble times:
day 1
week 1
month1
month3

Look at the times they give they're "awards" for AA, those are the proven, known "bad times" for addictions.

Convince yourself that it is an incredibly nasty habit. Feel strongly about it. Your mind will do the rest.

For example, I quit copenhagen Jan 2nd 2005. Jan 2nd because I didn't want it to be about a resolution thing. A month later my old man found an unopened can of cope rolling around in his truck. He didn't know I'd quit so he gave it to me. I couldn't stand seeing $5 go to waste so I opened it and put in a giant dip.

Threw up about half an hour later.

Drove straight through to Virginia a couple months ago. Got tired so I did what I always have done when I'm tired and on the road. Stopped and bought a can of cope. Didn't heave this time but I got pretty sick for a while. I'm a slow learner but it's not a lesson I need to learn 3x.

Three months was always key for me. I quit and started after three months on three separate occasions. IMO, it's the time when you think you've beaten it but you're still vulnerable. Now that I'm well past six months, I'm feeling pretty good, but the demon is certainly still lurking.

The physical craving is now gone. The psychological craving is what can get you. Stick with the mints/gum/whatever. And don't underestimate the power of your own brain to fuck you up.

SLAG 03-07-2006 06:23 PM

I find myself using the gum more and more lately... idk if its just a rough day or what... but I chew one peice for like 2.5 hours then I take it out and want another one right away

Mile High Mania 03-07-2006 06:29 PM

You're going to be thinking about it a lot ... esp if you have friends or coworkers that smoke. Just chew the gum, grab some suckers... do anything you can other than light up.

It's going to be tough as hell, but you can do it. You need to start associating smoking with things like ... licking a cat's ass... something disgusting.

I successfully quit smoking, I am on week 5! I have attempted to quit 3 or 4 times in the past and the longest I lasted was 2 weeks. But this time it is easier to quit now that I got a new job and they do not allow smoke breaks or smoking on the premises. It seems though when I go out drinking on the weekends, I always bumb a couple of smokes......which I now I shouldn't do, but I still don't wake up the next morning and light one up. I just went cold turkey the day before my first day on the job and it really wasn't that hard

Phobia 03-15-2006 11:42 AM

And now you have lots more money for beer. :)

Frazod 03-15-2006 11:04 PM

Seven smoke-free months now.

One problem - last week the wife and I were out having pizza. They had Sam Adams on tap so I ordered one. Now, I don't drink much any more, and when I do it's generally sipping expensive scotch at home. This was the first time I'd drank beer out since I had quit. As soon as I'd swallowed my first mouthful (Sam Adams on tap is wonderful, BTW) the cigarette demon said HEY fuckER I'M STILL HERE AND YOU CAN'T DRINK BEER WITH A SMOKE, DAMMIT! GET ME A MARLBORO NOW! Oh my God it was like someone walked up and punched me. Now, I was at a non-smoking restaurant, and the urge was long gone by the time I left, but I don't know what I'd have done if there had been somebody sitting there smoking. That would have been tough.

The moral of the story - cigarette demon is still lurking. It will try to hit you over the head with a bottle (or glass) of beer, so be ready for it.

Phobia 03-15-2006 11:07 PM

True, Tim.

I was waiting in line at a convenience store yesterday. I was fixated on a can of tobacco. I wanted it SO badly. I should really pay at the pump.
