The only thing I'm concerned about is the roads in the morning and how many dumbasses think they can drive full speed on them.

A Sears poncho or a Mexican poncho?

Definition of a crying shame - 20,000 Steeler fans who paid $1000 per ticket can't get to Arrowhead Stadium because of an ice storm. Mother Nature 1, Pittsburgh Steelers 0

As long as it's red either is fine.

.. What make you think the lions' share of those 20,000 people don't already live within 200 miles of Arrowhead?

Kiimo 01-10-2017 02:10 PM

This game is way too far out to make an accurate prediction with a system like that. I feel like we're practically in Butterfly Effect territory.

You're really over thinking the whole thing. It's supposed to be comic relief, just imagine all those Steeler fans stranded in Pittsburgh or on an ice covered highway after spending their money to cheer on their team and they can't get to Arrowhead. Keep it simple stupid!

While generally true, weather.com has had this pegged as freezing rain since the 14-day forecast starting coming out. It's unusual for things NOT to shift, but it's been consistent the whole way through this time. That gives me a pretty high level of confidence that it's going to impact travel at least some.

At least in PA, Weather.com is the least accurate from all I follow to track weather for school delays and what not.

I would save the chains to hit Steeler fans upside the head. :)

No-chains won't help much-the main roads are usually in pretty good shape.

Sure, but now the rest (NOAA primarily) are starting to agree which, again, suggests a higher level of certainty.

I've been keeping tabs because I was worried about my flight in. Watching local weather reports, it's not nearly the doom and gloom the OP here suggests. It may affect travel some, but no word of 2 inches of ice or widespread power outages.

Shawny2X4 01-10-2017 03:08 PM

So, how low do you all think prices will go because of the weather?

The Claynus Weather Report:

ChiefEd 01-10-2017 04:20 PM

Just got this e-mail from American Airlines...

A potential ice storm, which is forecast to begin this weekend, may affect your upcoming travel plans. We are currently offering additional flexibility that may allow you to change your travel plans without a fee. Visit aa.com/travelalerts for details on the affected cities and travel dates.

If I can't make it there or get routed to another airport, that'll suck. No matter what, not selling the tickets. We're all or none. Even if that means watching the game in the Little Rock airport with $800 worth of tickets in our pockets...

Chieficus 01-10-2017 04:21 PM

This is the latest GFS model with total ice accumulations up to noon on Sunday. It's forecasting between 0.25"-0.35" up to that time. That would be a nuisance that will affect traveling, but not be catastrophic. Most of the freezing rain is forecasted to fall between late in the evening on Friday through Saturday.

underEJ 01-10-2017 04:34 PM

I have the best job. My producer, a packer fan, saw the forecast and said "you should move your ticket up to beat the storm. Worry about getting back out later. The important part is getting to the game!"

:) She gets me.

I'm thinking of taking the train up instead of driving. Probably have a better chance of making it, I won't be taking a chance of wrecking my car and I'll have food and a place to piss if i get stranded.

I've taken the train to KC once, a long time ago, so I don't know if this is a great idea, or a terrible one.

Lots of days to go, but at it stands it is not looking good. I for one thinks this blows, but I will be out there regardless. Just MAJOR hassles likely getting in and out of complex. Hopefully this does not put a wet blanket on the attendance. In the 90s would not of mattered, but today's fans are far more fickle IMO.

I.thought about taking the train from kc to stl one time and I was surprised to find out it was like 4 times more costly than driving. pretty sure it was even quite a bit more than FLYING. not exactly sure why many would opt to go that option especially on long trips

Yeah, it'll cost me about $150 RT. But I would have spent $80 on gas, and I won't have to stress the entire drive if it is shitty out.

I'll pay an extra $70 to not end up in a ditch, or stranded on some remote stretch of I-70 alone.

$150, just for Amtrack St.L to KC?

I took it a year ago, Downtown to Lee's Summit 1W and it was like $45, IIRC.

Flying is only $99, but my parents live so far SKC that I can fly KCI to StL, retrieve my car and drive home and get there practically before they do.

Yep. The $50 each way fares are sold out.

Too late of notice to fly, Southwest wants damn near $500 RT - and if it gets shitty, air travel is certainly ****ed.

I think the projected temps are close enough to 32 F that the normal treatment of the highways and primary roads will keep them ice-free not affect travel.

The December 17th ice storm was not much total precip but near zero temps so the roads were too icy and everybody in KC needed to stay home.

I think the biggest threat is enough total freezing rain to cause downed tree branches and power lines.

For some reason their dire predictions during Chiefs and Royals games are usually spot-on. Main one to listen to is Lezak. At some point in next few days he'll probably sound confident and then we'll know.

Mr_Tomahawk 01-11-2017 07:48 AM

Last night Lezak said he wasn't expecting any major event. Some slicks spots at worse.

Said it would be just rain on and off during the game.

kcfanXIII 01-11-2017 08:54 AM

I always get a kick out of the "Weathermen never get anything right" crowd. If your expectation is 100% accuracy a week out, your chances of being let down are high. They're really high. Take the info for what its worth, and plan accordingly. That's all a weather forecast is good for. I tend to agree that when Lezak starts getting a weather boner, its time to pay attention. He normally has a pretty level head when forecasting, but its impossible not to notice the guy is a huge weather nerd, so he gets excited when events happen.
