I started shopping at AlDI more and it's amazing how much less expensive that place is. Plus, I really enjoy cooking so it hasn't been a sacrifice at all.

Yeah that's where I'm at too. I always tell my wife I feel like I get so much better value from going out to a nice steak dinner for a couple hundred bucks than I do paying 60-80 dollars to eat at one of the shithole corporate restaurants.

Fast food joints will never get tipped from me, especially now that they're making $15 an hour. No Tyler, I'm not giving you a tip for putting my food in a sack and handing it to me. Sit down restaurants with actual servers are a different story. I start at 15% and based on the quality of service, it goes up or down.

I got chipotle last night. $13 for a Burrito filled with crunchy rice and chicken as dry as tree bark.

15 dollars an hour my ass

Yeah, the tipping culture is out of hand, even worse than normal.

The ethical challenge for me is that I want people to make a livable wage, and a lot of jobs don't do that.

Having said that, if the person at the fast food window is making $17 an hour now, and then getting (total guess here) another $5 an hour in tips, that's a full-time equivalent of almost $46,000 per year. In Denver, that actually qualifies as a livable wage, and I wonder how it compares to a lot of new college grad jobs.

Good for them if they can make a livable age at the fast food window, I guess. But they'd better be doing a really good job of giving me fast service and good food.

Tipping culture got out of hand when places decided tips should pay wages so we're suppose to feel bad for them when in reality it's the owner being a ****.

That's a lot of it for sure.

Fast food people can make $12/hour starting out here. WalMart is about $11.50. Of course, there's room for advancement almost instantaneously (because of the shortage of workers) so they go up from their starting wage pretty fast.

Contrast that with full service restaurants. Some of the places around here don't even pay minimum wage ($7.25) so the servers are completely dependent on tips to make ends meet.

Yep. I hate having to use uber now, because the owners are apparently too rich to pay wages to their employees and started telling us to leave tips. I liked uber in the past precisely because I DIDN'T have to leave tips.

Just tell me what something costs and I'll pay it.

I did a Europe trip a couple of months ago, and it was so wonderful to see a price on the menu and pay that price without having taxes and tips added on. I don't understand why we don't do that here. Life would be so much better.

I really hate when you have to make the choice to add the tip BEFORE you get your food or service. 1) I don't know if they are going to do a good job and be deserving of a tip, and 2) I sometimes worry that if I put no tip then they'll spit in my food or something.

The US is still firmly in the "work hard and get ahead" mindset, even though a lot of us know that's a lie.

Europeans are pretty good at taking care of the little people. Not to say that it's perfect by any means but in a lot of ways, it's superior to the US.

Yea to be honest with you, it's just their way of maximizing profits, shareholders etc etc..

It's honestly no different than how if someone gets sick and starts a gofundme so they can pay for medical care or for their kid etc and people think that they got all that donations is a feel good story when in reality it should be a story about how terrible our healthcare system is.

ToxSocks 02-22-2023 12:09 PM

Lol, my local 7-11 has a tip jar. All of my pot shops have tip jars.

My favorite is how Walmart+ auto applies a driver tip to your order and you have to manually zero it out.

I use to tip grocery delivery drivers. Im over that shit now. I don't tip that shit and i no longer care.

Current America is like joining a monopoly game when all the property is already owned, houses and hotels placed, and then getting yelled at that you have nothing cause you're just lazy.

See, I never do that. I always tip, even if it's pennies on the dollar. But I never do the "round up for charity" thing. At least I know where my money is going if I leave a tip.

I have always used the divide by 7 rule, and have not changed. As the price goes up the tip goes up. Unless it's horrendous service, or really good, then change appropriately.

Is that not healthy? Half those meals are pretty healthy no?

Blood pressure is perfect. I dont have any bad cholesterol but I dont have any good cholesterol either. Just starting to notice I gain some weight in the winter when I dont golf but still within 2 lbs of what I weighed when I was 22.

It absolutely depends on where you work. Where my daughters worked, it wouldn't happen because all the employees actually cared about their work and the customers. It was a locally-owned place and they were really close to the owner. It was about pride and excellence for that crew.

But go across the street to Perkins and the meth heads cooking at that place might spit in your food just because, before you ever did anything to piss them off.

Around here it's fairly easy to spot the offenders. They're the ones with numerous health code violations.

I don’t get my hair cut until my wife starts telling me that I look like an old lady from behind. The girl that cuts my hair charges $22 and I pay her $30. But she went to school with my sons and I used to work with her brother.

We pretty much stopped eating out when I got cancer, mainly because I don’t have much of an appetite. If we do it’s usually a 20% tip for good service. If we take the kids and grandkids, we tip 25% because we act like a bunch of vikings.

This is a hidden issue for restaurants and other low paying jobs in high end areas. How to find low cost workers when average rent is $2,500-$3,000 a month and gas is $3.50-$4.00 a gallon.

I never realized this problem until like 10 years ago when I lived outside DC in Ashburn, Loudoun County and a restaurant owner told me about this issue.

Loudoun County is the #1 highest per capita income in the US for the last 10-15 years

My 2nd office is in Ashburn.

I just read an article this morning about a property tax incentive that created affordable living within a trendy upscale neighborhood in a major metro.

One of the anecdotal metrics quoted was along the lines of "this neighborhood needed baristas".

It takes years of dedicated to get a group of people to believe you're this ****ing stupid.

If most people trolled in this fashion, they would be called out for trying too hard, or just laughed at.... here though, people actually consider these posts to be true.

Those poor people need to be able to serve us. If they all move away, who will bring me my car or make my morning coffee? There are "Nantuckets" all over the country.

A couple rows of trees as visual barriers and two rows of tiny homes can be hidden away in a lot of communities while being touted as some kind of humanitarian aid or good deed project. I can't tell if some of the ideas being pushed forward are hilarious or sad.

So, when we have all the kids here (family of 5)... we don't get out of a grocery store without spending $250 and we'll make 2-3 trips a month, so it adds up quick and then you have the eating out.

I've always enjoyed the ritual of cooking and vino in the process so I'm ahead of the curve. But I will miss Red Lobster garlic biscuits for the occasional change of pace.

Trolling is just so weird to me. It's funny when Carcosa does it and occasionally he'll drop the façade if you're talking about something serious. Clay is a dipshit but he makes many, many non-troll posts.

What does BWillie get from his trolling? I guess just a little bit of attention? It's such a foreign concept to me.

You can buy Cheddar Bay biscuits at just about any retail grocer now. They're just as good as they are in the restaurant.

2nd that. An entire cookie sheet of those pairs well with an indica joint.

I love my service people (both of my daughters worked in food service until their owner died recently) and I generally tip handsomely. I did end up leaving a tip but it wasn't much. I thought it was kind of silly to even ask.

I would have been disgusted enough not to leave one. Pathetic of her.

Yep. Only go to a nice place twice a week. I consider Joes KC a nice restaurant...if you dont you are a terrorist.

The weekends I don't get BBQ it'll be another place like Final Cut, Fogo, or a LeFu Frog or something and costs even more so try to eat BBQ on weekends a couple times a month.

Seriously thats a normal week. Is it really that unhealthy? What do you guys eat? I dont go to McDonalds, Wendys etc that often. Usually traditional fast food only like twice a week. Maybe 3 if Im in a hurry.

Katipan 02-22-2023 03:10 PM

My favorite fast food is chicken schwarma from Fel Fel. $17 a plate. I'll never give it up for me. The kids get it way less often.

crayzkirk 02-22-2023 03:31 PM

When I head to the lake, I will grab a turkey or pork shoulder and smoke it. Split it into portions, vacuum seal it and I have food for a couple of weeks. It can be done fairly cheaply however, it takes some planning and shopping around.

Do you seriously eat out this much regularly? That's insane.

I feed a family of 5 on $1k a month, which includes feeding 2 teenage boys.

I could only imagine what I'd concoct if I spent twice that.

I do but I just dont use the stove or oven. I havent cooked since 2008 when I used to be a work out goon. Id put raw chicken from Sams Club in a casserole dish, some water and boil it in the microwave to cook it. Some greek seasoning on it and viola. Then eat peanut butter by the spoon. It was hard to gain weight back then. Not so much now but I could lose 50 lbs in two months easily if someone did a prop bet. But that would be silly since I weigh 185-190.

I did a detailed analysis of my spending last year. For a two-adult household, I spent a total of $10,482 on food, or $201 per week.

Of that, $7,241 was spent on groceries, or $139 per week, and $3,241 was spent on restaurants, or $62 per week.
