Betemit's defense is garbage and Aviles profiles better at 2nd (plus his arm might not be back to 100% after TJ surgery).

Betemit has some trade value.

I'd imagine that Aviles' arm should be 100 percent this year. Hell, I was told by Jays fans that it's no problem whatsoever to have TJ's, a PLUS in fact!

It happens that way, sometimes. Remember back in 1993 when that pitcher for the Cubs came back from a broken arm? His tendons got tighter when it healed, and he wound up becoming the Rookie of the year because he could throw the ball so fast. Dude was only 12 years old, too.

33 Million? Really? They aren't even trying this year... I get building for the future but come on, the whole pay roll is one and a half Yankee contracts. Is no one else infuriated by this?

Why the hell would I want the Royals to throw away money on this year when it would be better spent on 2013+, when we actually have a chance?

Our core will be cheap until 2017 at the earliest.

The money we bank now until then should allow us to resign enough of the guys to hopefully stay competitive (assuming we become competitive, of course) key word is SHOULD.

Or we could spend it on filling our weakest gaps in 2013+ (allowing us to make a championship run) and continuing to stock the farm system, revolving through young, cheap talent. Rinse, repeat ad infinitum.

Except for the Glass folks will pocket the money. I doubt we ever see a payroll above 75 million.

no.

Payroll doesn't take into account the crazy money we've been throwing at the draft and at latin american signings the last couple years. I'd also hope we are banking money for the future. This year we'll have all the money we need to get whatever we want (barring japanese players with an overinflated opinion of themselves) in the draft and international free agents.

If we throw 10-50 million at another random jose guillen/gil meche/insert name of overpriced old guy here, it will be a dumbass waste of money.

Payroll doesn't HAVE to be above $75 million to be good/competitive. Look at the Rays, the Rangers, the Twins prior to the monster Mauer contract. Until this crop starts hitting the end of service years, the Royals should continue to spend lavishly on young talent.

Key then is to resign the right guys (to their first big contract) and keep up a great farm system than can continually replenish the roster. Gotta make sure you resign the Mauers and Morneaus and let the Eric Chavezes go...
