unless he fasts foward several years its just going to be impossible, from a production point of view, to go a full seven seasons. just the actors themselves will have changed from young or teenagers into full blown adults. i agree books 2 and 3 are full of awesomeness so youre probably right it might get spread out over two seasons then. maybe 4 and 5 will be combined since not a whole lot goes down. i guess we'll see what 6 and 7 holds but im guessing the suits at HBO arent willing to drop the massive amounts of dough to complete the saga all the while waiting for this dude to get off his lazy ass and complete the series

keg in kc 02-27-2012 11:13 AM

They began tinkering with the ages of young characters before the series even began (Robb/Jon/Sansa all older) so I don't think adjusting to the actors playing Arya and Bran getting older is going to be any major kind of hurdle. Who knows though.

Main thing will be maintaining the ratings. That'll be what ultimately determines how long it runs.

L.A. Chieffan 02-27-2012 11:35 AM

ROME was a terrific show with a wide viewing base that was slated for 5 seasons. they realized about halfway through season 2 that it just was too expensive. hopefully they dont think that way with this

And season one was pretty heavily condensed as it was. If anything, I think they might combine the events of books over multiple seasons, like Feast and Dance together over two ( or three) seasons, everything happening chronologically. And if anything, it's probably more likely that individual books would be divided into seasons. Like Storm of Swords. That book is incredibly long. How in the world do you compress that into just one season, much less try to combine three books (all of them very long) into two seasons. I wouldn't be surprised if there ended up being more than 7 seasons, because there's so much ground to cover.

Besides, what are the odds that Martin actually finishes the last two books in less than 5 years? Or that he doesn't end up having to write a third? If season two is in 2012, and they do a season annually we're talking about season 5 in 2015, meaning he'd have to finish the sixth book in time to broadcast season 6 in 2016 and then the seventh in time to do season 6 in 2017. And that's broadcast. They'll have to go into production in the year prior. Meaning 2015 for season 6 and 2016 for season 7. That's three and four years from now, respectively.

Does anybody really think Martin's going to have the entire series finished in four year?

I never underestimate the ability of a studio to shorten and bastardize a story in order to fit production timelines, budget, and aging actors.

One of my coworkers got it. He said one of the coolest parts is that it has lots of the characters telling the history of Westeros in character. So, it will have a section on the Night's Watch, and Tywin Lannister, Ned Stark, and Robert Baratheon all talk about it in character.

It got monster ratings. If it can grow a little, we wont have to worry. As long as HBO and their writers can make good tv. Hopefully Martin can live long enough to finish it. lol

Hopefully it gets 6 or 7 more seasons.
I don't think GoT costs nearly as much to make as Rome since they shoot on location instead of giant sound stages.

Book Description
Publication Date: March 27, 2012 | Series: A Game of Thrones: the Graphic Novel (Book 1)

You’ve read the books. You’ve watched the hit series on HBO. Now acclaimed novelist Daniel Abraham and illustrator Tommy Patterson bring George R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy masterwork A Game of Thrones to majestic new life in the pages of this full-color graphic novel. Comprised of the initial six issues of the graphic series, this is the first volume in what is sure to be one of the most coveted collaborations of the year.

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.

Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jamie and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.

Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.

EXCLUSIVE-'Game of Thrones' rules HBO's DVD sales

Lisa Richwine, Reuters March 16, 2012, 7:13 am

LOST ANGELES, March 15 (Reuters) - HBO's award-winning fantasy drama "Game of Thrones" has earned a new crown: the largest first-week DVD sales among any series in the cable network's history.

Season one DVD sales reached about 350,000 units in the first seven days following its March 6 release, the network said on Thursday. That pace ranks ahead of other popular HBO series including "The Sopranos," "Sex and the City" and "True Blood."

The program also set an HBO series record for sales of digital downloads from outlets such as iTunesapple, the network said, but it did not provide figures.

"What we are seeing is 'Game of Thrones' being a hit across all platforms-network, disc and digital," said Henry McGee, president of HBO Home Entertainment.
Further info says that it was the number 2 seller for the week, behind the movie Immortals, and that 57% of the sales were Blu-Ray, which is apparently just enormous for a tv series.

It really helps that they dropped the price all the way down to $35 in certain places. HBO used to be complete dicks about pricing on their tv series. When Band of Brothers was first released, it was like $120 for regular dvd.

Baby Lee 03-21-2012 08:40 PM

Definitely a Stark.

Could see being a Targaryen [great vengeance and furious anger, as Jules would say], maybe even a Greyjoy if you love the sea, but WHO THE **** would be a Lannister? Even Tyrion wearies of it And without Robert, the Baratheons leave me cold.

Hawk 03-22-2012 10:49 AM

Those were pretty cool!

I agree, how could anyone be in the Lannister house? It would be like picking Slytherin House in Harry Potter.

I love the actress playing Dany, she's doing a hell of a job breathing life into that character. And, well, she's ****ing hot! I kind of hope they move a little of book 3 Dany into season 2 because she truly kicks some ass in book 3 and I'm looking forward to seeing it on the show.

I also like the guy playing Rob Stark. He's not a character I ever grew overly fond of in the books, but he is one of my favorites on the show.

Funny how that works. It was like that with Khal Drogo for me too. Didn't think much of him in the books, but on the show he was awesome. Too bad Drogo had to die!

I felt like Robb Stark was miscast a little at first, but I grew to like him. He did a great job portraying Robb in season 1 so kudos to him.

Stark. No doubt about it. Targaryen, perhaps.

Just rewatching the first season on HBO lately, and the way he handled Greatjohn Umber throughout the last few episodes of the season totally won me over. I really hope...

I still didn't like him in Dance with Dragons. The only character that GRRM has really redeemed in my eyes is Jaime. I can't wait to get back to whatever it is that he's doing.

You guys do realize this is the thread where spoilers are okay, right?

Ehh you have people that have just seen the show and not read the books. Why ruin future plot twists for them?

Hawk 03-22-2012 01:55 PM

I assume that means spoilers up through the current place where the show is which is just the end of book 1. I try to spoiler tag anything having to do with later books because I don't want to ruin any surprises for people, plus its easy to click the spoilers if you want to read them.

I agree with that...it just seems like all these spoiler tags have been for later events and then he posted that.

I don't think he's a bad person, I thinks he's just aflayed.

That's why we created a non-spoiler thread.

I don't like him. Never said I did. I just felt sorry for him when just a couple of books earlier, I was wishing worse things on him.

Maybe I'm just wishy-washy? /shrug

Totally different beasts, IMO. Theon, IMO, is just out there looking out for #1 and trying to prove shit to himself and the world. Ramsey is just a completely demented, sadistic piece of shit who, honestly, has no place in any kind of world.

Spoiler!

I hear you!

So this leads to an interesting question, which characters do you most want to see get what's coming to them at this point? Spoiler tagging it because some of the obvious choices may have already been offed in the books, and others are on the list for reasons not yet known to show watchers:

My list:

Finally got around to ordering (and receiving) my bluray discs. I'd...umm..."procured through the use of alternate means" the series originally, so it's awesome to see them in 1080p. It's pretty impressive what they've been able to do with a TV-only budget.

kcxiv 03-25-2012 12:39 AM

Didn't realize season 2 starts next week. Sooo freaking excited.

WoodDraw 03-25-2012 12:08 PM

I just finished the third book, and loved it. I was a bit disappointed with the second, so was great to read a strong third book. I wanted to run out and start the fourth right away, but I've heard some mixed reviews, so I think I'll switch to some other reading for awhile.

The spoiler policy here seems pretty confused, so I won't say anything. But I think it's the first book where I didn't dread having to read certain character's chapters.

Also, the HBO series looks great. I hope they're making enough money off of it to keep it going. And that Martin keeps writing!

You can talk about anything that happens in any book here. That's why there's a spoiler warning in the thread title. If you want to talk general Ice and Fire, this is the place for it. We need to have a place like that, so we can talk about stuff like Jon's parentage, a place where fans of the series can talk about the things they know and try to figure out what they don't.

People will want to argue that, but I think at the end of the day, it's too difficult to police spoilers when you're talking about a series of books that began in 1996, and Dance With Dragons came out 8 months ago. So whatever statute of spoiler limitations there is has pretty much expired now.

For the folks who haven't read the books, or who haven't finished the series through DwD yet, I created a separate spoiler-free thread that's been linked in the first post on this thread for nearly a year. You can find that one here. So, Ice and Fire noobs: use it, love it. That's what it's there for.

This just needs to be made more clear. Perhaps it's time to kill all the threads and start anew. I think a lot of people come here just for news about the show. When I first posted here, I was only reading the first book and I asked for everyone to avoid spoilers - and everyone agreed. That was the agreement then - nothing beyond what had been shown in the show. I guess that's now evolved - but not really.

I like coming here to see previews. But I vote we separate the show and books into different threads.

[edit] Also, I don't think there is any spoiler warning when you actually click on the thread. And if people are like me, they don't always read the first post, especially for updates. I'd hate to have people that are reading the books or watching the series have some of the great developments ruined by this mish-mash of a thread, where every poster seems to have different views on when do hide spoilers and when not to.

jspchief 03-25-2012 03:17 PM

Spoiler warning in the title?

I'm cool either way since I've read them, but I respect people's desire to not be spoiled, particularly knowing how these books dish out wtf moments.

Yeah, the title is actually "HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)" but it doesn't always show up as that for whatever reason. I created a whole other thread for spoiler free talk.

Might just start new threads next sunday. This one's pretty long as it is.

Yes, read it. Especially since you will have the fifth book immediately available when you're done.

Hawk 03-26-2012 07:36 AM

I think the main reason people have an issue with the fourth book is that the ending of the third book is great, but then three of the main characters and their story lines just don't show up at all in the fourth book (weird choice by GRRM), so if you go straight into it from book 3 wanting to find out what happens next with those characters and don't realize that they aren't in the book atl all (like I did), it gets frustrating.

But if you know it going in and are mentally prepared for that, and you have the fifth book to read once you are done with the fourth so that you can pick those storylines back up, it is not so bad and you can enjoy the fourth book more. I liked it better on a re-read for that reason, because then you can really focus on all the interesting details and the characters that are focused on in the fourth book.
