When he called the turnover, he'd made a couple of iffy calls in the minutes leading up to that and you could see Haith was getting annoyed. The turnover happened right in front of Haith and the Mizzou bench so during the timeout, Haith was talking to him. Haith finally turns away to his huddle and that asshole official walks into the huddle and starts pointing at guys and going back at Haith. It was amazingly unprofessional.

The entire place went nuts on him and you could see him start to get agitated. He started to get more animated as the boos got louder and finally glanced around and walked over to the scorers table to 'spot' the ball and call for the inbounds.

I honestly could've seen him calling that next bucket a charge had the crowd not been wildly hostile not 15 seconds before that call. It was as angry as I've seen Mizzou Arena in a long time.

I thought that whole segment was great coaching strategy on Haith's part - after the 3-4 iffy calls, the TV coverage showed Haith having a heated discussion with the official and the next call was the "and 1" on Denmon's lay-up. That completely flipped the momentum of the game.

I didn't realize that idiot referee initiated that much interaction with Haith and the players.

It always ends the same way. When they can overwhelm an opponent with talent, the win and look great doing it. When they run into a talented team that plays well together, they fold at the first sign of adversity and suddenly turn into 5 guys just trying to get theirs. 22 points on 6-21 shooting in a 16 point loss just means they scored 22 points, and that's all that matters to those guys. Lacedarius Dunn was the master of that, and now Drew has a whole team of guys with that mentality. That can work when you have NBA talent 7 deep with 4 lottery picks, but Baylor isn't there.

I completely disagree with you here...well at least as to the team he has this season.

That's how Baylor's played in the past, but they haven't looked like that at all this season and they've taken a couple of really tough games this season to the wire.

They folded in Lawrence, but a lot of teams have folded in Lawrence - Allen will do that to you.

Underestimate this Baylor squad if you want, but there's no way this is a 'Dunn' style, me-first ballclub. It's a damn good team that's actually looking extremely well coached this season.

The stupid thing is that Haith is about the calmest coach with referees I've ever seen. He is respectful to a fault and did not deserve to have a ref show him up like that. As a referee, do you really want to condition coaches to think they have to berate you for 40 minutes in order to get a fair shake?

That ref was a prick and would've been a prick to anyone. The whole game he was walking around the court with his elbows back and pulled away from his body in that cocksure muscle-head pose.

Some folks are just mother****ers - that ref qualifies. He'd have been a mother****er with Frank Martin on the sideline as well, IMO. Though I'll have to agree that there's no way on God's green earth that he'd have tried to barge into Martin's huddle like that.

In either event, the jackass fired up the crowd more than anything, so I can live with it. I just hope the guy isn't doing any tournament games - he has the kind of attitude that can absolutely alter outcomes.

I can live with a ref who misses a call here and there. They all do. I can live with a ref who gets influenced a little too much by the crowd. Its human nature and almost part of the game.

I can't stand whistle-happy officials who don't let the teams dictate the style of the game, and I can't stand refs who think ESPN is there to film them. Their tiny bit of power does not mean that they should turn into Dwight Schrute.

If the season ended today, would Haith be National Coach of the Year?

He would be one of the top candidates for sure one would think.

Couple crazy conference games tonight. ISU with the buzzer beater, KSU pulls one out while choking at the free throw line.

Still, as always, and in both cases... home team wins. It's weird.

I'll be shocked if Mizzou wins at Baylor. Not only is it a road game, it's just a bad match up. That said, If they do win, it's HUGE.

Top 10 Thursday: Coach of the Year
By Myron Medcalf

1. Steve Fisher (San Diego State): He’d win the award today. His Aztecs lost four players from the best squad in the program’s history. Kawhi Leonard was a first-round draft pick last summer. And yet, Fisher has a top-15 squad again. The Aztecs are on top of the Mountain West thanks to their talented conductor.

2. Frank Haith (Missouri): The general reaction to Haith’s hiring was “Huh?” Miami was never a threat in the ACC under Haith. What could he do with Mizzou in the Big 12? Well, Haith has quieted all doubters with the Tigers’ stellar start in a talented league. He might lead the Tigers to a Big 12 title without any real size or depth.

3. Jim Boeheim (Syracuse): Just as the season commenced, Boeheim lost an assistant coach who was accused of sexual abusing a former ball boy. Boeheim admittedly pledged his allegiance to Bernie Fine prematurely and intensified the scrutiny on his program. The fact that Syracuse is the undisputed No. 1 team in America is impressive. The fact that Boeheim has led his team to that station despite an unprecedented off-court controversy is stunning.

4. Tom Crean (Indiana): For all of the critics who’ve emerged within the past 24 hours, just look at what happened last season. We’re talking about a team that finished 12-20 (3-15 in the Big Ten). And this season, the Hoosiers have cracked the national rankings and defeated two of America’s best teams. If the Hoosiers bounce back from their recent slide, Crean will shoot up everyone’s list for national coach of the year … again.

5. Steve Prohm (Murray State): This feels too low. In his first year as head coach, Prohm’s Racers are ranked 10th and they’re undefeated. Despite losing three starters from last season’s team, they’ve topped Memphis, Dayton and every other team on their slate. And Prohm’s squad might not lose before March.

6. Greg McDermott (Creighton): Last season, Creighton was in the CBI. This year, the Bluejays are ranked 18th in the country and led by a player (Doug McDermott) who was expected to redshirt last season. Today, Doug McDermott is a legit national player of the year candidate. The Bluejays (51.8 percent) are the best shooting team in America under his guidance.

7. Bill Self (Kansas): There are three guarantees in life -- death, taxes and Kansas contending for the Big 12 title under Self. This was supposed to be the year that the Jayhawks fell from their perch, right? They didn't have a recruiting class full of McDonald’s All-America kids. They went all in with Thomas Robinson, a reserve last season, who doesn’t have the luxury of being surrounded by other NBA talents. It's a team guided by Tyshawn Taylor and his turnovers. And here they are again, sitting atop the Big 12.

8. John Thompson III (Georgetown): One preseason publication picked the Hoyas to finish 11th in the Big East. But Thompson has turned this balanced team into one of the best programs in the Big East and the nation. And unlike the rest of the country, the Hoyas have looked comfortable in tough road/neutral site wins (Memphis, Alabama, Louisville). Thompson says he’s not worried about respect and recognition. But his coaching effort this season demands both.

9. John Calipari (Kentucky): Laugh if you'd like. I know some folks think Calipari plays games on his smartphone while his superstar freshmen take care of business. Well, how does that theory (that Calipari doesn’t really coach these studs as much he lets them freestyle) explain the development of Anthony Davis’ offense? Or Kentucky’s seventh-ranked adjusted offense and defense (KenPom.com)? Calipari is molding this young group. Don’t believe it? Let’s talk in New Orleans.

10. Kermit Davis (Middle Tennessee): The Blue Raiders start four players who didn’t compete last season. At 17-2, they’ve already won more games than last season’s 16-win team. Some coaches struggle with one transfer and Davis has seven on his roster. Plus, the Blue Raiders have won nine in a row. Based on their defensive prowess, MT might be this season’s VCU. Credit Davis for getting so many new players on the same page.

Yep, I believe in Haith now. Get some more bench players and some size and this team is a final four contender every year with the offense and defense we run.

mnchiefsguy 01-19-2012 07:27 PM

Steve Fisher coaches in the Mountain West. Frank Haith is in the Big 12. No way I give that award to Fisher over Haith.

We're gonna get in foul trouble early if we're not careful too.
