Well, right now, let's be clear. No head coach today can succeed without not just a good qb, but an elite one. Thanks to the stupid nfl rules limiting defenses. But I think McCarthy and Payton are phenomenal coaches even if they are nothing with even a good qb versus an elite qb. But when qbs meant less, people forget that new England dominated in a non qb era with a dominant defense and Brady playing more of a game manager role.

Welp, this pretty much rules out getting an up-and-coming GM like a Russ Ball, Dorsey, Ross, etc.

Hiring the HC first likely means getting pigeon-holed into a guy that wants full control - a setup that rarely works.

Devaney was hired as the full time GM before Spags was yet Spags had final say on personnel. So it's possible that an opposite circumstance could occur, just seems unlikely.
