This was an incomplete pass for one reason... Kelce ****ed up the route. Kelce reaches the line to gain and is supposed to just drag down the line, horizontally. Instead, just as Smith throws the ball, Kelce cheats up-field vertically and allows the defender a lane to slip in front of him and get a hand on the ball. If Kelce runs the route correctly, then there was no way the defender would be able to get around Kelce to disrupt the play... the chains rattle, drive continues, etc. etc.
Everyone can belly ache that the route above was coming open and would have been a huge play, blah blah blah... it's 3rd and 2. Kelce reaches the line to gain and is open - there is no reason to go to the next read in the progression. It's not like he can check really quick to see if there is a better option that might possibly open up and then, if not, go back to Kelce. It's all about timing. Kelce was open beyond the line to gain... trigger pulled. It's that simple.
I used to get chewed all the time for cheating up field just like he did trying to get a jump on a big play. Tempting to do, but what was most important here was picking up the first down - he should have come straight down the line to gain. I guarantee to you that this is exactly what was discussed in film review.
