The Chiefs held the Broncos to 27 without any semblance of a pass rush and with their offense doing nothing but going three and out all night. The Chiefs can hold that team to 20 in Denver, but that doesn't really matter.
Tonight exposed several things about the Chiefs. They don't have any playmakers on the outside and their QB is a coward.
If Alex Smith was born in 1954 instead of 1984 he would have had a far better career, provided he got on the right team. He's just not comfortable throwing the ball downfield. It's not a matter of making a smart play, either. Down 2-3 scores in the 4th quarter is when you start forcing balls into tight spots to make plays. The object of the game is to win, not cover the spread. Even on the last drive he was checking down. He should have been throwing jump balls. It's the only shot the team had at doing anything.
When you have a game manager the team around him must play excellently. The Chiefs didn't. They dropped too many passes, blew too many coverages and blocks, and their pass rushers got consistently owned last night.
Denver had a better game defensive game against the Chiefs than any other team they've played this year.
Reid was also way too conservative, FWIW. Kicking the FG inside the 2 and not having Succop try the FG in those conditions was just cowardly.
The defense was really bad a few times tonight, but they also got hung out to dry horribly. If the Chiefs had any semblance of offense, they could have made it a game in the third quarter, but they are just totally inept.
