It's funny. Once you get a hole in a place, it's really hard to fill. I've been trying to get myself a pass-rushing outside linebacker for six years and can't do it. Admittedly, I haven't invested high picks, but you'd think over time one of them would work out.

So where can I start in this?

I was in this back in 2009...but stopped playing after a year. Do I just start fresh?

kccrow 02-04-2016 12:40 PM

I'd love to get in on this as well, looks fun. Can't believe I've never read this thread...

Cool. If you want to start, you can start with the current Chiefs roster. You'll get the same draft picks that they do, and lose or gain free agents as they do. The only difference is who you draft. We have a few rules about trade-downs and trade-ups that you can look up, or I can share them on draft day.

We did a few special things to rosters when we started this several years ago, but at this point I'll just wave my hands at them. Start monitoring the thread as draft day approaches, and I'll post up the available picks and any trades to accept or reject. Then in training camp you'll finalize a 53-man roster and go from there.

I'm glad you're interested. The game starts slow because your roster doesn't diverge quickly, but after several years it's really cool to see how the team changes.

I may have to try this, but I'm worried that I'd pull a Rainman and make my team demonstrably worse than Scott Pioli did.

I mean, congrats on the Russell Wilson thing and all, but Hankerson and Wright instead of Houston and Poe....that's not so good.

Hey, Wright would be a strong starter on the Chiefs, and ... Russell Wilson, so I win.

Bowers is probably my biggest regret. I shuffled my draft around to get him, thinking he would be a cheap star and that didn't work out at all. CJ Spiller is a bummer, too. I thought he would blow the place up. He's still around and playing, but just as a bit player.

Feel free to join in. It's fun to look back once you get a few years under your belt.

I'll have to try to remember it in a month or so.

I'm surprised by how few 'pre-draft' trade downs I've seen going backwards in the draft. Seems like most of you are content simply eating the discount and moving down.

So do we just start with the Chiefs roster as of the draft? How do we handle FAs?

You start with the current Chiefs roster, but you won't get any of their draft picks later unless you also pick them. If a Chief is cut, you can choose to keep him, but if he leaves as a free agent he's gone. You don't lose free agents from other teams when they leave, which is really just laziness on our part since it's a lot of work.

You'll get any free agents who arrive for the Chiefs.

For me, I like the security of moving down exactly where I want to be. I don't want to take the risk of trading down and missing the guy I'm targeting.

In real life, I hate trading down. But in this game it's worth it sometimes even if you have to give the discount. At least, that's the case in my opinion.

chiefscafan 02-04-2016 09:12 PM

Yeah I'm still bummed about missing the draft year of Russell Wilson he would of been my pick in the third round I loved him in that draft. Got to busy that year to participate and was forced to take the Chiefs draft. Oh well no use in crying now I have to hope a QB I like falls probably . Thought geno was gonna be a lot better than he turned out.

So for now what's the roster size? Is it 90 like during the normal NFL offseason? We just have to get down to 53 before the start of the regular season.

Yeah, in your case you'll start with the entire KC roster after all free agency moves. You'll then add your own draft (but not the Chiefs' actual draft). Finally, you'll drop to 53 when the NFL does their final cuts. We have no IR and no practice squad - just 53.

Pass-rushing OLB

Moderate priority:
Eventual starting HB
Starting DE (again!)
Starting LT (again!)
Starting SS
QB depth

Low priority:
Starting FB

I thought Devito was coming back. His retirement really shuffles my draft priorities.

Yeah, he screwed us all.
