What a huge grab for the royals/me 3 years ago

Found this post with a possible reason, written by Greg Shaum:

Danny Duffy has informed teammates and told the Royals that he is walking away from the game. I will give you more details as I get them but I was told by someone close to the situation that he had lost his love of the game and wanted to go back to school.

Basically he wants to party like other kids his age, still think its a stupid decision. Considering at worst he becomes a 4 or 5 starter in the majors he could set his family up for life. That said...if he doesn't love the game then no point being here.

Glad Zack got his head figured out

Brian McRae was on 810 earlier today. Said that part of the reason was conflict with the desire to start vs. being asked to do some relief work.

"We're really pleased with what Kyle Farnsworth has done. We're going to continue pitching Farnsworth, regardless of how much we get." -- Trey Hillman

Farnsworth has allowed 4 walks, 17 hits, and 13 runs in 12.2 innings this spring. The manager of a major league baseball team is pleased with that.

What has been the point of picking up Josh Fields? Has there been a worse spring than his?

I think we could trade for Pujols or Joe Mauer and they would suck ass here.

We need to stop trying to justify his salary. Sometimes you think you know something everyone else doesn't know, your being mocked but damn it you'll show them because your RIGHT. To your horror, the rest of the world was right and now you look like a fool.

At this point the correct action is to sheepishly admit that you blew it, the money that is still due is just a sunk cost, just dump him, send him to AAA, whatever. You dont have to make a public spectacle of it or apologize to anyone, people expect the GM to make a stupid move now and then, just cut your losses, let it just be another line in the daily MLB transactions report and say nothing.

The wrong move is to be stubborn. OK, that year sucked, but damn it I'm still right, and I'm gonna show em all. This guy has "ok mediocre pitcher that can eat innings" somewhere within his failed arm, right?

Haven't been keeping track on spring training...do the Royals have a set lineup yet?

BillSelfsTrophycase 03-27-2010 01:33 PM

"We're really pleased with what Kyle Farnsworth has done," Hillman said. "We're going to continue pitching Farnsworth, regardless of how much we get, with the possibility that he's going to be inserted into the rotation at the back end.

Another thing that really annoys me is how they react to his Spring performance.

I understand that Trey is probably stuck with Farnsworth and has to project some sort of nice "company line". Fine, but there's a lot of ways to do that. First you have to acknowledge that Farnsworth is not having a great spring. Throw in the word "challenging", talk about how he's working on perfecting a new pitch rather than acting like this is a regular season game. From there, pivot to the season and use words like "we are optimistic that", and throw the words "we hope" 2 or 3 times. Then bring the answer to the question to a merciful end (you obviously do not volunteer to discuss Farnsworth, this has to be an answer to a question), and change the subject to how swell Greinke is doing.

There's a ton of ways to answer the Farnsworth question in a positive way without looking like a moron. Talking about how pleased you are with Farnsworth and that he'll be pitching no matter what (without some sort of caveat, like he's practicing a new pitch without worrying about the record) makes you look clueless.
