I love how you ascribe some sort of nobility to foolishly spending money on a shitty team in an attempt to make it better. The Chiefs and the Raiders are both shitty. Who cares what the payroll is? If you spend $75,000 on a Mercedes that doesn't run, and I spend $14,000 on a Nissan that doesn't run, neither of us is getting where we're going.

The difference is (if I may further strain the metaphor), when I need to replace a part (resign a player) or finally get the engine fixed (draft a 1st round QB) I'll have the budget to do it. You'll be sittin pretty in a worthless car you can't afford.

The best way to get him to commit to the new QB would be for a guy like Orton to come in and establish that it truly was a Cassel problem and not a line problem or a weapons problem or a coaching problem, blah blah blah.

Orton does nothing to preclude a 1st round QB, he may just make one slightly more expensive. In the process, he could also effectively slam the book shut on the Cassel era by playing quality football.

Nice post. I don't understand why people can't see that this could effectively slam the door on Cassel, and actually make this organization draft a QB.
You really think Pioli is going to keep the guy that got replaced by Tebow (that he picked up off waivers) as our long term answer?

This will be fun come Jan 1 2012!
My son and I switch venues every year and this year we go to Denver to watch the Chiefs play his beloved Donks.
Just having Orton will make this freakin hilarious!

Cassel was a stopgap too, even though that wasn't the Chiefs' intentions, we all knew he wasn't the answer. Orton is a better stopgap. They didn't claim him to be a reliever for the rest of the year or to be a backup. Cassel is done.

He traded for Matt Cassel, who he was more familiar with than anyone else in the league, to be his guy at QB for the Chiefs, so yes, I do believe that Pioli is more than capable of this kind of stupidity.

You don't keep a stopgap in place three years. IMO this organization just picked up their latest retread who now is going to be handed the keys. What scares me is the possibility that its being made as a pre-emptive strike to bring in McDaniels and not draft a QB for next year. Think I'm being paranoid. Same ol' shit the Chiefs have always pull.

I don't know if this signals the end of the Haley era, and the begining of the McDumbass era, but I do believe that Orton will have a new contract before this season comes to an end.
