I value him as an elite ace prospect. Nothing more. Not an elite ace pitcher, an elite ace prospect. No pitcher from Japan thus far should have gotten a bigger contract than what I mentioned above.

Worthwhile gamble? He wouldn't come cheap, but he still has ace upside.

Would you be willing to offer him two years for $20-24MM?

Royals show interest in Oswalt

By BOB DUTTON

The Kansas City Star

The Royals are expected to meet with the agent for free-agent pitcher Roy Oswalt during the General Managers’ Meetings, according to ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick.

The meetings began today and run through Wednesday in Milwaukee.

Oswalt, 34, is seeking a long-term contract, according to agent Bob Garber, despite the possible limitations imposed by two degenerative disks in his lower back. He became a free agent when Philadelphia opted not to exercise a $16 million option for next season.

The Phillies are still hoping to retain Oswalt, who went 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA but made only 23 starts because of back problems. Washington, Arizona and the New York Yankees are also showing interest.

Oswalt is a three-time All-Star in an 11-year career that began with 9½ seasons in Houston before a July 29, 2010 trade sent him to Philadelphia. He is 159-93 with a 3.21 ERA in 339 career games.

I think it's worthwhile.

They would have to overpay to make it happen, but I would be OK to overpay for a veteran competitor who still can pitch at a high level and stabilize the staff.

in, pay the guy and get another solid pitcher without giving up any of our youngs...

eazyb81 11-15-2011 12:36 PM

The positives about Oswalt are that we won't have to give up any prospects, we probably won't have to sign him long-term like some other free agent pitchers, and when he is on he is probably more effective than any other pitcher available.

The downside is he has a bad back and only threw 130 innings last year. It would suck to commit $20-25MM to him and then have him go lame.

If he stayed healthy, I think he would provide the perfect two year bridge before guys like Montgomery, Lamb, Odorizzi, etc came up and were counted on to contribute.

This rotation would compete in the AL Central next year:

Oswalt
Sanchez
Hochevar
Paulino
Duffy

Do it. His back is a concern though.

I think the Royals can afford to spend a bit on Oswalt, even with the injury risk. The PR move would be benificial, for sure.

Then you use him carefully, watching his pitch counts closely and doing everything you can to get the back healthy.

If nothing else, it takes some pressure off the young guys and gives them a chance to work with a true pro who has had the highest levels of success in MLB.

I don't Greinke EVER becomes the pitcher he was in 2009 if Gil Meche is never brought in.

2 years, $28 million base that runs to $18 or $20 million/year with incentives. Might get it done.

Once for the posting fee and once for the contract.

I didn't pay much attention during the whole Dice-K thing, but I thought the "posting" amount was applied to the salary, assuming a contract is agreed to with that team. If not, the posting fee goes to Japan.

I'm one of the few people against the Oswalt thing. Paying a HUGE chunk (in relative terms) for an injured pitcher on the downside of his career has rarely been a shrewd move in baseball.

Checked with a #Royals person who said the team's interest in Oswalt is "minimal.'' Sounds like a due diligence thing at this point

DeezNutz 11-15-2011 01:26 PM

On the one hand, I like the idea of signing Oswalt. However, on the other hand, his attitude in the past suggests that he'd simply be looking for a payday were he to come to KC; I don't think we'd see his best effort if, for example, he would need to rehab another injury.

Jackson would make a hell of a lot more sense, even if it's for more years and money.

Well, I guess our season will matter until at least Mid July this year, anyway.
