Worthwhile gamble? He wouldn't come cheap, but he still has ace upside.
Would you be willing to offer him two years for $20-24MM? Quote:

They would have to overpay to make it happen, but I would be OK to overpay for a veteran competitor who still can pitch at a high level and stabilize the staff. |
in, pay the guy and get another solid pitcher without giving up any of our youngs...

The positives about Oswalt are that we won't have to give up any prospects, we probably won't have to sign him long-term like some other free agent pitchers, and when he is on he is probably more effective than any other pitcher available.
The downside is he has a bad back and only threw 130 innings last year. It would suck to commit $20-25MM to him and then have him go lame. If he stayed healthy, I think he would provide the perfect two year bridge before guys like Montgomery, Lamb, Odorizzi, etc came up and were counted on to contribute. This rotation would compete in the AL Central next year: Oswalt Sanchez Hochevar Paulino Duffy |
Do it. His back is a concern though.

Then you use him carefully, watching his pitch counts closely and doing everything you can to get the back healthy. If nothing else, it takes some pressure off the young guys and gives them a chance to work with a true pro who has had the highest levels of success in MLB. I don't Greinke EVER becomes the pitcher he was in 2009 if Gil Meche is never brought in. 2 years, $28 million base that runs to $18 or $20 million/year with incentives. Might get it done. |

I'm one of the few people against the Oswalt thing. Paying a HUGE chunk (in relative terms) for an injured pitcher on the downside of his career has rarely been a shrewd move in baseball.

Checked with a #Royals person who said the team's interest in Oswalt is "minimal.'' Sounds like a due diligence thing at this point |
On the one hand, I like the idea of signing Oswalt. However, on the other hand, his attitude in the past suggests that he'd simply be looking for a payday were he to come to KC; I don't think we'd see his best effort if, for example, he would need to rehab another injury.
Jackson would make a hell of a lot more sense, even if it's for more years and money. |
