It's a philosophical problem, and it starts with LaRussa, who believes that the first pitch is one of the best to get. In a vacuum, that may well be true, but it ignores the fact that you get lest accustomed to the pitcher when taking fewer pitches, and you allow him to work deeper into the game, thus exposing the worst part of the staff, the middle bullpen, the least.
