Lefebvre was awesome on the radio as the counterpart to Denny. He's increasingly become homerific on FSN over the years, which is a far cry from the font of sarcasm that was the Matthews/Lefebvre radio booth.

I don't have any insight, but wouldn't they just move Jeff Montgomery into the booth to replace Frank?

Or did I miss something?

As for the pitching, I tend to agree that it's not worth overpaying for a FA pitcher who isn't worth it (although I really like CJ Wilson), but at some point DM has to get a legit #1 down the road. I don't expect the 2012 team to win the WS or anything (although I do expect a pretty big improvement), but at some point you're gunna have to get that #1 somehow... Now that I think about it, I supposed we could have that guy in the organization somewhere...

Monty might be an option although he's busy being a radio sales manager which takes a lot of time.

As far as #1 in the organization... maybe the other Monty or Odorizzi but they're both just up and comers at this point. I agree that a true ace would be nice but if we can't get it this off season I "think" we have enough to compete now. I'd rather we go with what we have than over pay a guy who isn't really an ace. Maybe they can trade for it yet.

What pitchers are FA next offseason? Maybe Moore is waiting on somebody specific.

Don't know, I'd have to look it up. Waiting for someone specific could be the case... my feeling is they just believe they have the arms coming up to do the job. Could be wrong.

With the caveat that "next year" always looks better than it really is because a lot of those guys will sign extensions before next year arrives, its not really "next year" being good so much as it is "this year" is underwhelming.

I am perfectly happy to have Moore sit on prospects this year. It would be awesome to take a totally home-grown team to the WS. What is really amazing to me, is that we have such a derth of talent still in the minor league system that we could/should move some of our more developed talent for younger talent. JMO

Do you mean glut of talent? De(a)rth means a lack.

Sure. I wonder how many times I have misused that word!
LMAO

Radio sales manager as in helping the Royals sell ads for their broadcasts or working for another random station?

I don't know what exactly you expect this team to compete for this season (as of right now, I'd be perfectly happy with a .500+ record in 2012), but I agree that it's perfectly fine for DM to be sitting & waiting for a good scenario rather than panicking & doing anything to grab that #1 (or any piece, for that matter). This franchise's window for competing for championships is barely even cracked, there's no need to go crazy. I just think if you're going to win the World Series (which is the goal at some point, right?), you need a go-to pitcher. Need a win, put said pitcher on the mound...

And we'll see what he does in the rest of the offseason and down the road, but I'm starting to feel a helluva lot more comfortable with Dayton & the job he's doing. I know "The Process" gets made fun of a lot (much like the "Right 53" which I think is complete bullshit), but I like that Dayton's stuck to his guns and now has this team in a position that it hasn't been in my lifetime with a lot of people around baseball seemingly starting to take notice of what's going on in KC.

I can't wait for the Chiefs sorry asses to finish their season so I can start watching the Royals.

...

That's the first time in my life I've ever said/typed anything like that.

Wilson8 12-02-2011 05:58 AM

The Royals have backed off on signing free agent pitchers because the ones that are good want a multi-year deal. The Royals feel like the kids they have coming up are going to be good quality pitchers but they need a pitcher for the next year or two. That's one reason for the Chen re-signing.

Moore has said in interviews that they are still looking for rotation help through trade. If they can get a good quality pitcher with a year or two left on their contract, that is what they will do.

He's the Sales Manager for 810 WHB. A buddy of mine just finished up an internship with Petro there.

edit... although upon looking it up his title is Vice President-Internet and New Media. Buddy said Sales Manager.

RockChalk 12-02-2011 10:23 AM

Petro is going off right now about Dayton Moore telling Fox he no longer wanted Frank White as a color analyst for games in 2012.

Is Frank a little to real for you, DM? Frankly (no pun intended), I enjoy a broadcaster who tells it like it is, rather than sugar-coating and glad-handing the organization.

Royals story on SportingNews.com…it says that Melky Cabrera was the Royal’s best player???

Quote:

The heralded youngsters started to arrive in 2011 and, for the most part, showed plenty of promise even as the Kansas City Royals endured their 17th losing season in the past 18 years. With their continued development plus improved pitching, the Royals could take the next step—a winning season—on the long road back to contention.

Offseason agenda: The Royals’ lineup is virtually set with Lorenzo Cain expected to take over center field following the trade of Melky Cabrera to the San Francisco Giants. While the pitching staff isn’t quite as far along, general manager Dayton Moore already has made two moves that should help. He acquired left handed starter Jonathan Sanchez—and prospect Ryan Verdugo—for Cabrera and signed reliever Jonathan Broxton to a one-year deal.

Sanchez and Broxton are coming off disappointing, injury-filled seasons but, based on their stuff as well as their past, they should help Kansas City. Besides a fastball that averaged 98 mph two years ago, Broxton brings the experience that comes with being a two-time All-Star. He won’t lack motivation as he tries to re-establish himself as one of the game's top closers. His presence also creates flexibility with closer Joakim Soria, who could be traded or converted into a starter. (Neither move is being considered for now, Moore told reporters). Sanchez has the stuff of a No. 2 starter, but a lack of command held him back in San Francisco.

The rotation will include at least one other new starter with Aaron Crow moving from the bullpen. As a rookie in 2011, he posted a 2.76 ERA in 57 outings. The club will have a new pitching coach, too, with Dave Eiland replacing Bob McClure, who was fired and took a minor league instructor job with the Boston Red Sox.

The Royals also re-signed their left hander Bruce Chen, their top starter over the past two seasons, to a two-year, $9 million deal. Former Cleveland Indians starter Aaron Laffey was claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees and will compete for a spot in the bullpen.

Possible departures: Cabrera was the team's best player last season, but trading him made sense; his value couldn’t have been much higher and Cain is ready for his chance.

Free-agent lefthander Jeff Francis isn’t expected to return after losing 16 games with a 4.82 ERA in 2011. Although catcher Jason Kendall hinted at a comeback as early as last spring training, he never made it back after career-threatening shoulder surgery in 2010.

Early 2012 outlook: The good times could be ready to roll in K.C. The All-Star Game is coming in July, the organization’s top-rated farm system continues to pump out prospects and two AL Central rivals (the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins) have fallen on tough times. Second place isn't out of the question.
