In other news, how badly did we miss Cueto and Zo? Obv great players that outsized this market, we weren't going to keep them but....Cueto finished 4th in pitching fWAR at 5.5, Zo at 4.1. We got almost nothing from 2B and our rotation, so you can say a net loss of -8 wins. 89 gets a playoff spot.
Also Moose losing 3 fWAR from last year to Cuthbert a replacement player mattered, that's basically all you need to explain the gap from 2015. Those 3, we make the playoffs.

Hosmer's defense definitely took a step back this year. I'm done talking about Fangraphs 1B metrics, though, so I'll leave that alone. Baseball Ref's figures judge Hosmer much less harshly on baserunning than Fangraphs, which is weird. I thought they lined up pretty well on those, in the past.
Cueto was a replacement level player for KC in 2015, whose best performances were in the playoffs. They survive without that if a few other guys - Volquez, most notably, but Chris Young, too - don't fall completely off the table.
Zobrist definitely was missed. His offensive prowess would have made a big difference for KC.
