Who says he wants to resign? Carl said some very nasty things to him in his last round of contract talks. This has John Tait written all over it as the Chiefs might not have the money to resign him (LJ eating up cash and a large debt to service on the renovation).

I think teams can also agree to lesser compensation. CP could agree to a 1st and 2nd. |

You are assuming quite a bit. What inside info do you have that Carl isn't negotiating right now? Did he say we're not signing Allen to long term deal we're franchising him? Like the title of this thread says, Allen isn't leaving. He'll be a Chiefs next year and most likely for several more. |
They also can structure contracts to work in their favor like a poisin pill or by giving all the money upfront. I'm sure there are some teams that would actually consider giving up picks for a premier DE going into their prime. JA is the real deal.
The main point is, if you already KNOW you are going to sign him long-term why wait and give teams an opportunity to set the pricetag for his services and or attempt to sign him away from us? It's more in a long line of reasons why Carl is still an incompetent boob 19 years later. |

Does it say they're only gonna tag him? |

But it will probably go like Tony G's holdout in 2001-2? did. JA wants the big time deal. King carl refuses and franchises him. JA says FU I'm not reporting to camp. Long and nasty holdout ensues. 2-3 games into the season a long term deal gets done. Some factors to consider.
