My wife and I went to high school together, and dated for several months our senior year. She was gorgeous, funny, smart... and more than just a small amount of the time... she was a raging bitch (she'll admit it). So we broke up before prom, I ended up going with a friend, and she went with a guy she ended up with for 7 years.
Had to sit next to her at graduation, which I was so pissed about, and she antagonized me the whole time in very small ways. But then she moved away, and I didn't talk to her for 7 years.
So 7 years later, I'm dating this girl, who I'd been dating for several years, but made sure to let her know almost daily that I wasn't her boyfriend. She calls me one day and says, "Guess who I saw on our high school alumni website?" and tells me about my ex. We laugh and I pretend that I wasn't interested, and then hang up the phone and sign in to the site. Within a couple of days, my ex emailed me, and we went to have drinks. By the end of that night, it was all over. I got home and was a mess. I called another ex girlfriend, who I had maintained a friendship with, and told her about it and she told me, "Everyone could always tell there was something just a little more about you and her than there was the other girls you dated."
So I went ahead and married her. It helps a lot that she isn't the raging bitch she was in high school, but kept all the other great stuff. I definitely married up.
