I was with the employee until he just kept beating them while on the ground. That's where this crossed from self defense into criminal behavior. Attacking defenseless people is pretty much the most cowardly act you can carry out.

Sorry but, when you lay hands on somebody it's no longer customer/employee. The guy was unable to retreat because the customer hopped the counter to follow him. That makes him fair game IMO.
