Go slow with Romeo
It's probably not possible to overstate how much the Chiefs helped Romeo Crennel's cause by beating Green Bay yesterday. The Chiefs looked every bit the team they should have looked like all season. The way they played speaks for itself, and for Crennel's bid to become the permanent head coach. The players clearly responded to their new leader in ways that surprised everyone, perhaps even chairman Clark Hunt and general manager Scott Pioli.
But there were other things that maybe you missed that support removing the interim tag from Crennel's title. Offensive play calls were so efficient the Chiefs were getting to the line of scrimmage with 15 seconds left on the play clock. Substitutions on both sides of the ball were timely and smooth. Those are functions of the head coach, or perhaps in this case the head coach getting out of the way.
There was so much to like in there it's natural why the Chiefs don't just go ahead and hire Crennel on a permanent basis right now. That's not going to happen for at least a couple of reasons.
First, it shouldn't happen now. The Chiefs won't, and shouldn't make a decision based on one game, however good or bad. When Hunt and Pioli fired Todd Haley, they cited the Chiefs up and down play as a big reason. If the Chiefs return to the tank in next week's game against the Raiders, how would Crennel as the permanent hire look then? The Chiefs instead need to see similar things from Crennel and the players in the final two games for true validation of Crennel's impact.
Second it's not Pioli's way to make such a quick move. He's got to get this decision right. Moves made at an emotional time like this usually don't work out. He'll want to talk to a few candidates, a good move even if only to validate the eventual hiring of Crennel.
So this is going to take some. Almost certainly the Chiefs won't make a move until the season is over. It may no immediately happen after that.
But sometime in January the Chiefs will have their new guy. And if the Chiefs continue to play as they did Sunday, then and only then should it be Crennel
