I'm a bit of a beer snob, so my general rule is to stay away from all Domestics and Imports whenever possible and instead look for a good craft brew.

If you're new to the craft world, the best kinds to get into without feeling like they're too weird are generally ambers and wheats. There are tons of them out there, so I won't mention specifics to try - be adventurous!

Not that it REALLY matters, but the beer snob in me requires me to inform you that Blue Moon is made by Coors, Shock Top is made by Budweiser, and Leinenkugels is made by Miller. The beers themselves are fine, but I usually steer clear out of principle.

I think it's reeruned to push a beer away because it's made by a certain company. It's like your comparing Coors light to Blue Moon. Which is totally irrelevant. Blue Moon beats the shit out of Coors 7 days a week.

Too thick or too much alcohol or will it give me the shits?

If I were you, I'd look and see if you can find a 12-pack mixer from a good brewery that has a variety of lighter beers. You'll probably find one that has an amber, a pale ale (or an IPA), a stout or porter, and some sort of wild card. That'll help to start giving you the idea of what's what. Then you can go from there.

Well sure. But I choose to support the craft beer industry so that it'll keep growing rather than lining the pockets of Coors. I agree that if you're purely looking for taste, there's nothing wrong with it.

when I'm in a bar with only bud/miller etc, and I'm feeling too cheap for a microbrew, this is the beer I look for...not sure if you find it in california

easy to drink, just a touch sweet, doesn't taste like urine

Shiner Bock is good.

Darker beers are usually heavier - they're VERY filling. If you're looking for something you can drink all day long, stick with the lighter stuff.

Fire Me Boy! 09-09-2012 08:27 AM

How about a nice wine?

I picked up a 6-pack yesterday. I started noticing them around last weekend.
You're gonna slap me, but I also really enjoy the Sam Adams Cherry Wheat.

Not bad but not first choice.
