Its more likely to have a TE break 1000 receptions than say a RB break 4400 rushing attempts again...or even 3800....(its so much more of a passing league now)

He IS a terrible, terrible WR... he has no business playing that position, way too small, gets lost in a crowd, cant take a mugging from a safety or corner, he's just waaay to easy to cover downfield.

The way they're using him is criminal, he can be ok with quick hits and screens in space near the LOS, but sending him downfield is as bad as it gets, he doesnt stand a chance.

Either dumboll is even dumber than we thought, or pioli, despite his protests, manipulates roster decisions as much as we thought... Breaston is on the bench, but dex gets the call for the #2-3 spots?

Gates won't. He's 32 and needs about 400. He's hurt too much. I overlooked Whitten. At 30, and with 747 catches, he will do it barring injury.

Again, longevity. Whitten has only missed 2 games.

I agree it has a lot to do with longevity...

But others will do it after Witten as well.

1) Longevity (medicine / sports therapy) is improving

2) Passing is more common, and since the NFL keeps nerfing defenses I expect this trend to continue

3)the TE will only become more valuable in the passing game, as we have already seen.


So it will come down to longevity (of course) but if the other two factors (TE's being used as a weapon more, and passing being more and more common) then Tony G wouldve never had 1000 no matter how long he played....So where there was 0 tony G's before, there will be a witten, and sharpes/gates types who will come close and other who will break the record....MORE than just because of longevity..(but more than just the 1 Tony G)

But yes of course longevity is a factor (as everyone can easily see)

Gonzo is sure to have an ACL in week 17 this year.

The methods that they have for dealing with ACL injuries are so much better now that:

1) players are coming back faster

2) players are able to come back to a higher % of their abilities

3) players can play longer after their injuries

So this is where the longevity part of the equation I think will become at least a little a bit more common.
