Smith was a number 1 overall pick, Cassel didn't even start in college. There's a huge gap in talent level between the two.

And Cassel has been a starter for two fewer seasons than Smith.

Nah, usually the other way around. Think about how many things can go wrong if one person botches an assignment, if your QB isn't on the same page as the receiver, if any route is mis-timed, if your line isn't in sync, etc.... Not that defenses don't need that stuff too, but there's so much more of it on offense. Defenses can often improve overnight.

Regardless of your opinion on Alex Smith (I think he's an average QB), he's a much better QB than Cassel. Period.
