Add Russell and I think we're good with just one inexperienced guy.

Now does Nelson have any experience? The guy played 10 snaps last season. He's as "raw" as the incoming players.

I don't know who's going to play where, outside of Peters, but I'll be shocked if Gaines and Russell aren't the starters.

Nelson absolutely has more experience then any of these rookies coming in. You don't think going through an NFL training camp makes any difference? What about going against NFL receivers every day such as Jeremy Maclin? You don't think the experience of playing spot duty in a few games is more then a rookie right out of college?
You don't think that going through a year of coaching from Hall of Fame former players isn't valuable?

Gaines -RCB
Russel - Nickel

until maybe november or so

Gaines out wide, Russell in the slot.

Russell is just a far more physical player than Gaines and with the way Sutton uses the NCB, I think you need a little more physical presence there.

It won't be Nelson because he's bad. I could see Murray jumping him on the depth chart by the end of camp and White could pass him by the time the season's over. White's pretty much a carbon copy of Nelson anyway. Very similar strengths and weaknesses, very similar style of play.

What makes you believe that Nelson played every day in practice against Maclin? The ****in' guy was on the bottom of the depth chart.

And apparently, all the coaching and "experience" he got last year didn't do much in terms of a 2015 payoff.

Add to that, Russell had far more experience in college and was an All American as a Freshman. Had it not been for the stupid suspension and broken tibia, the guy was a first rounder.

I didn't see anything at all from Nelson that would lead me to believe he's a starting NFL CB, inside or out.

Hard to impress in only 10 snaps. I'm not giving up on the dude just yet.

.. Although said lack of reps and drafting CB so heavily this past weekend probably doesn't bode well for him.

I had to listen to the Nelson defenders say all year "these guys see him in practice and know a lot more about him than you do...."

Okay...they saw him in practice, know a lot more about him than I do, elected not to play him and damn sure appear to have layered the shit out of him. I'd say that means something and it ain't good.

It wouldn't shock me at all if he's one of those 'surprise cuts' in 2017. Dorsey's always going to be sniffing around for DBs; he'll take at least one more next season.

Hard to argue against that. We really don't know much except for what we see when we read between the lines.

Personally, I'm hoping he was just buried under the depth chart because we had such versatile, athletic and experienced safeties.

When Fleming and Cooper are on the field before Nelson, it's a pretty solid bet that he either sucks or has a long, long way to go.

This.....with White as the dime back. I'd put Murray in the hybrid CB/S spot on this defense.

After seeing Cooper in early 2014 and Fleming in early 2015, I have no choice but to agree.

Just saying, nickel in the NFL is a damn tough position to play. Nelson is pretty small and, IIRC, not a supreme athlete. He wasn't likely to start on day 1. Especially with such talented safeties on the roster.

BossChief 05-02-2016 02:33 PM

with the way corners are paid in FA, it's a very smart strategy to keep drafting CBs so we don't need to overpay in FA.

With us to have a chance at winning a title with Alex Smith at QB, we're gonna need a stacked defense and lots of electric playmakers around him on offense.

I think we have that.

I'd like to see Russell outside against the big boys, but with as much as teams do with that slot wr, can't go wrong.

RunKC 05-02-2016 02:35 PM

I don't get the hate for Nelson. He was basically red shirted ala Dee Ford. At the end of the year he got on the field and actually showed well for 2 snaps against an elite WR.

I think he was a pure depth pick just like Murray and White. He's definitely got questions, but as a fan I want to see more of him before passing final judgement.

Sounds like Dorsey likes him from his press conference. I'm glad they added competition though.

Right now I'd take Nelson over Fleming and Cooper though.
