As soon as I'd swallowed my first mouthful (Sam Adams on tap is wonderful, BTW) the cigarette demon said HEY fuckER I'M STILL HERE AND YOU CAN'T DRINK BEER WITH A SMOKE, DAMMIT! GET ME A MARLBORO NOW! Oh my God it was like someone walked up and punched me. Now, I was at a non-smoking restaurant, and the urge was long gone by the time I left, but I don't know what I'd have done if there had been somebody sitting there smoking. That would have been tough.

The moral of the story - cigarette demon is still lurking. It will try to hit you over the head with a bottle (or glass) of beer, so be ready for it.

Cig demon is better than Coke Demon coming around??

No

It was easier to quit coke. Of course, when I quit coke, there weren't ten people freebasing outside the door of my office building every morning when I went to work. Hard to get away from cigarette smoke. Well, not so much anymore.

OK.... this is more for me than for the planet BB....... but what better thread.... I just made it through week 1!!!! And I made it through my most difficult test yet! Poker night..... I've been dreading playing poker without lighting up a cig, and I did it tonight!! It may sound stupid, but this has been worrying me for weeks....

Thanks to everybody posting in this thread!! I know I have a long way to go before I can brag about 7 smoke-free months, but fucking baby steps....

Thanks all.......... you have helped......

Best advice I can give - GUM. Not nicotine gum, just regular gum (I use Trident, so it's good for the teeth, too). Replace your oral fixation with chewing instead of smoking.

Good luck. Poker night must have been a bitch. I would have personally sworn that off for a while. Be careful. Cigarette demon definitely plays cards.

I've been chewing the shit out of these Tea Tree Australian Chewing Sticks..... basically fancy toothpicks soaked with tea tree oil, cinnamon, peppermint, and spearmint.... I highly recommend them!! Made by Thursday Plantation Co .

It's been a big help for the oral fixation...(insert joke here)...

I've actually caught myself taking them in and out of my mouth (insert joke #2 here) just like a cig......

And yes, poker night was hell....... of course everyone else was smoking and giving me shit for quiting...... I feel I made a major accomplishment.

Thanks again for the support... whether ya knew it or not......

And those toothpick things rock - I just don't know where to get them.

You can get them here.... or just search the intraweb....

I can't tell you how much these have helped..... try it.... I justified it by saying it was less than the price of 2 packs of cigs...... and the flavor lasts longer than the stick does.........

I quit this week as well.

I had said I wanted to be smoke free by my birthday.
Didn’t quite make it.:(
BUT!!

I started coming down with a bug last Sat, by Sunday I was in bed all day, Monday, -Wed were rough, but I managed. The doc isn’t quite sure if I had a touch of food poisoning, or a slight flu bug, either way, it’s now 1:29 am, and I’ve officially gone 6 days with out a smoke.ROFL

Quit cold turkey, and today was work day #2 with out one.
Don’t know if I’m starting to feel any better or not??:hmmm:

But I know one thing is for sure, since the headaches have passed you can’t say 2 words to me without some primal force taking over and having me want to kill you. (Go ahead and say it, a RaIders fan gonna go to prison for murder! :banghead: ) I’ll keep you posted!

I used to drink a two liter bottle of that shit every day. Switched to diet soda about 10 years ago, but now I generally don't drink soda at all unless I'm in a restaurant.

As fat as I am anyway, I hate to think how huge I'd be if I still drank MD like that. Damn.

You must be motivated..................

my wife was the epitome of addicted. She quit a couple times because she needed to. She finally quit when she WANTED to. Think this way. You are an addict. You can NEVER have so much as a social puff again. Then you will finally kick it. Good luck.

p.s. I quit several times. But until I new that I was nearing my window of opportunity I would always relapse. You will know when it is truly the right time.

Boyceofsummer 07-17-2006 04:01 PM

Epilogue............................................

My Mother-in law quit smoking in 1988. She now is in the last stages of smoking related lung cancer. My mother is 83 and I catch her smoking occasionally. What are ya gonna do.

i've tried the patches, gums, and losenges. once i was done with those, i would go right back to smoking. it sucked.

i tried something new.

cold turkey.

i haven't smoked in 2 months. don't feel like it at all. it was hard (very hard) for about 5 days. after that, smooth sailing.

i am under some immense stress and haven't felt the urge at all. i have also been out drinking without the urge. i would like to say at this point that i'm done, but i know how that has gone in the past. to be honest though, i do feel a lot different this time going cold turkey... i don't feel the struggle i have felt in the past still trying to get the nicotine out of my system that the patches, gums etc kept in my system after quitting the "act" of smoking.

good luck to you, i know it's hard, but if you want to do it you can.

having kids that bug the crap out of you to quit helps a lot too... ;)

i guess it never goes away

never goes away? so they say...

however to support my claims that cold turkey is the way to go, i have been in the middle of a (*nasty*) custody battle and i haven't gone back to smoking. talk about being fuckin' stressed out??!! i'm there and then some for certain dude. my ex is a real fucking winner and has put my kids through HELL for the last 2 years. she's an abuser, a scumbag liar and a friggin drug addict to boot. has no business being anywhere near children. dealing with all this BS had kept me smoking for a long time, but i just said "fuck IT" and quit 2 months ago. everyone thought i was reeruned for trying during all this court sh*t, but it seemed to work for me. (i was miserable enough all ready... gnome sayn? ;) )

they smell nasty to me now, and the thought of polluting my lungs again after all i've been through since i quit is just completely moronic to me. the crap is coming out of my lungs in big old chunks. it hurts, but it also feels good to know it's getting out of there. it's actually VERY nice to be able to take a full, deep breath again.

good luck to you too dude. i KNOW it aint easy, but stick it out. breathing is much more important. i just watched my grandad pass on due to emphysema a few months back. i did it for him and for my kids (and for myself). if you have some inspiration of your own, go for it and stick to it!

cigarettes SUCK!!!

I went out drinking tonight, and I had about 4-5 smokes.......I still want to quit, but damn it is tough, especially since I like to drink and have a job that is stressfull.....I'm still going to try to not smoke tomorrow, but it is tough to quit, I've quit a lot, the longest I've lasted was 7 weeks, but every time I got stressed at work or went drinking I wanted a smoke.....I'm still going to try and quit though

I am not trying to dis you on this KCCM, but you just listed several reasons why you can't stop. I bet if you really sat down and thought about it, you would come up with a lot more reasons why you can. Just by reading your post, I can tell you are not ready to quit yet, in which case, you would likely fail if you tried. Your heart has to be in it and you have to be ready to face the mosster one on one, spit in its eye, kick it in the oat sack and know in your heart there is now way you can lose. That's the kind of attitide you are going to have to muster when you decide to quit. When you want it bad enough, you can damn sure do it.

Confucius say, the easiest way to quit is to not start.

Aye aye, Skipper.

There's more to it than just the literal meaning ;)

Well, I have been thinking about ending my smoking habit soon. I talked to my Dr. and he wrote me a prescription for Zyban. I have not filled that prescription yet but I think I will be soon. I have been told that Zyban works well. We will see.... Good luck on your quest.

The gum worked for me. Been about 6 months now.

Frazod 08-15-2006 08:21 PM

One year. No cigarettes.

stumppy 08-15-2006 08:27 PM

Think I'll smoke something to celebrate for you.

I could celebrate by reliving one of my old vices. I could drink a bunch of southern comfort, or perhaps snort some coke. Just for old times' sake. ROFL

Good job dude. I wish all my friends could quit, not because I dislike cigarettes so much but for their own good.

boogblaster 08-15-2006 11:28 PM

IF you have any teeth left chew a fresh piece of gum every time you crave a smoke it will help....BOOG OUTT...

Frazod 08-15-2006 11:33 PM

Thanks, everybody.

Yeah, nobody is thinking whats my quality of life going to be at 60. Smoking will only knock off 2-5 years off your life but your quality of life will be for chit the last 4-5 years before that. And the burden you will place on your family to take care of you during that time will be crushing to your soul. Struggling to get a breath into your lungs and guilt stricken is no way to go out.

Frazod 02-16-2007 04:17 PM

A year and a half smoke free. :thumb:

The Franchise 02-16-2007 04:23 PM
