I'm probably going to get blasted for this but I think getting Cassel for a 2nd round pick is an absolute STEAL.

It'll be interesting to see what we do with the #3 pick...Curry OR will Haley want Crabtree?

I didn't watch that much of that Pats last year. If it's true that he improved a lot through the season and showed he has the tools, then this could be a steal.

I'm just nervous after seeing that offense's potency cut in half.

3 or more sacks in 10 games. It was a typo. 47 overall. Led the league in sacks taken last year.

It's a legitimate problem.

cassel is a hell of an athlete, who is young, experienced. You have to have some stability at the QB position. Good move scott.

OH MY fuckING GOD

This is insane. I can't believe Pioli just did this.

Is it really for just a 2nd rounder?

The Bad Guy 02-28-2009 12:45 PM

What I'm trying to understand is how you could proclaim Sanchez as the next big thing and then knock Cassel when they have roughly 1 year experience except Cassel's came against NFL defenses.

2nd round pick is very, very good.

so is Stafford's inconsistency and Sanchez's lack of experience...

Pioli apparently likes Cassel, his experience, and his cost more than Sanchez or Stafford.

As a fan, I can put my trust in a former executive of the year.

Patriots | Hold still... Cassel situation just got more complicated
Sat, 28 Feb 2009 10:30:21 -0800

Updating previous reports, Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports a third, undisclosed team has entered the picture surrounding QB Matt Cassel. The trade parameters are in place between the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, but it is not a definite yet that he is being shipped to Kansas City. Schefter says Cassel is being traded, to which team has yet to be determined.

SECOND-ROUND PICK FOR CASSEL
Posted by Mike Florio: Saturday, February 28, 2009 1:34 PM
I previously was convinced that the Patriots wouldn't be able to work out a trade sending quarterback Matt Cassel to the Chiefs because I believed that new Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli and his former colleagues in New England feared the perception that one side got snookered.

There was no such fear, but it won't change the perception that one side got snookered.

Peter King of SI.com (who also does some work for NBC, and pretty much every other media company on the planet) reports that the Chiefs gave up only a second-round draft pick for Cassel.

Wow.

A second-round pick, for a guy who merited a $14.65 million, one-year contract based on his play in 2008.

Let's consider that for a second. Daunte Culpepper with blown-out knee was traded for a second-round pick. A.J. Feeley was traded for a second-round pick.

So, with all due apologies to the Patriots, the current score is Pioli 1, Pats 0

Ultra Peanut 02-28-2009 12:46 PM

I feel kind of weird, because I saw the thread title and I was really upset. Then I saw "second-rounder," and... I just feel weird.

I don't think he's ever going to be a top-tier QB, but he is a 26 year old who's proven that he can be adequate with an elite surrounding cast. So, um. Hmm.

If it's really just a 2nd rounder, we got a great deal in terms of value.

nychief 02-28-2009 12:49 PM

espn news is confirming..

wild1 02-28-2009 12:49 PM

so what does the draft pick value chart say about getting your QB with a 2nd round pick instead of the #3 overall?

Hootie 02-28-2009 12:49 PM

Pioli: "Bill, what about all of those women you were with over the years that I hid from your wife?"

Bill: "Scott, this is different, I can't give you these two players for that when Tampa Bay is offering their 1st round pick for Matt..."

Pioli: "Remember when you had the crabs and the only thing that made you feel better was this lotion? Well I found another use for it. [unbuttons his shirt] It feels so good it makes me wanna sing! Just like that night we spent in the tattoo parlor in Chicago!

Bill: "THE DEAL IS DONE!"

nychief 02-28-2009 12:50 PM

getting a vet LBer and a starting QB for a high 2nd is a good deal. Two starters for one pick...

nychief 02-28-2009 12:50 PM

we are also helping the pats with their salary cap situation, that is part of the reason for the discount.

Pollard and Mcbride were 2nd rounders. Puts it all in perspective when you look at it like that.
