Fascinating History of the Cheating Chickenhawks
by
Tiger Gary
In order for everyone to truely grasp what a bunch of arrogant cheating slime live west of KC, I've put together 3 installments of the History of kU Probation....here is Part 1.....the current decade....
All of this is from the Lawrence Journal World (LJW or Pravda) and the NCAA documents on their web site.....I did not make this up or exaggerate
During Hate Week be sure to understand what a bunch of cheats follow that program....
A Sordid History of Cheating and Misdealing at (k)ansas (u)niversity…….
Chapter I…….The Current Years……………………
2006 “I don’t need to cheat”……Mark Mangino (2006)
The NCCA found major violations in men’s basketball and football and the dreaded lack of institutional control in the Athletic Department.
The NCAA found boosters had paid at least $5,000 each to two basketball players directly as well as their AAU coaches and family members from 2002 -05….
Boosters also paid for recruits and AAU coaches to travel to NCAA Regional sites for recruiting purposes..
A booster also purchased an auto for a recruit / player’s use and later signed for a loan for his mother’s car
Other boosters were found to have paid “graduation gifts” to various basketball players with the knowledge of the AD personnel, including Roy Williams, who specifically endorsed the practice. These cash gifts ranging from 100 to 400 per booster were allegedly “to assist in the player’s transition to the real world” (I guess that meant LESS money?). Boosters were lead to believe, by Wiliams, this was permissible since eligibility had expired.
The NCAA also found 7 JUCO football players were allowed to live on campus and participate in summer workouts with kU football, while taking correspondence course work needed for eligibility at kU. Two assistant coaches were cited for providing answers to players in completing on line course work.
The Athletic Department was cited for its complete lack or record keeping on NCAA mandated third party compliance…..and Roy Williams was specifically cited
kU football and basketball was placed on probation for 3 years. Here is some kU Karma……their football probation expired on the EXACT day as their last football win this year….
2003
AD Al Bohl is dismissed…..after a falling out (naturally) with Deputy Dawg…
”…I believe the Kansas basketball coach had the power to hold his athletic director in his hand like a dove, and he had the choice to either crush me with his power of influence or let me fly with my vision for a better total program," Bohl said…. "He chose to crush me."
2001
Al Bohl is hired by kU’s President specifically to “clean up” what had become a mismanaged AD. kU had asked the Stanford AD and President to audit the Department and to make recommendations
Lies by Larry Brown and other coaches at one of the most penalized athletic program in NCAA annals….A Sordid History of Cheating and Misdealing at (k)ansas (u)niversity…….
Chapter 2 ? The Sleeze of the 80’s
1989 “….''I just know that we ran a clean program..” Larry Brown (1989)
The NCAA found kU basketball guilty of multiple violations. Defining the term “pot meet kettle”, the NCAA was tipped by calls from Memphis St. Then kU coach Larry Brown had recruited Vince Askew to Lowrents when Askew spurned them for Memphis. Not to be deterred, Vince shows up to spend the summer in Larry……all while enrolled at Memphis…..he returned to Memphis less than a month later (some say his paycheck was merely upped)....but Memphis blew the whistle.
kU was found to have paid for his time spent in Larry…..Brown said he paid him…but it was only to assist him in visiting a sick grandmother……the fact that paying those expenses was a violation ? even for his own player, much less someone else’s ? seemed to have eluded LB…..
Vince later went on the Nets and was the same moody, disagreeable, greedy player in the NBA that he was in college
Drawing the ire of the NCAA, kU’s response to the allegations was that the incident was overblown, in that ...." kU never benefited since Askew never played at kU"
A really, really ill thought response…….
The NCAA noting kU football probation just a few year’s previously seriously considered the Death Penalty. ''Kansas was on the bubble, so to speak,'' said David Berst, the N.C.A.A. assistant director for enforcement. (NY Times).
In the end, the NCAA folded like wet paper….placing the program on probation for 3 years, banning them from post season play, and taking scholarships.
They remain the ONLY NCAA Champion that was denied defending its title……and are the ONLY program that has won its titles while on probation the year of or the year succeeding its win
Out goes Larry to the NBA…….in comes Deputy Dawg from UNC
1983
In a 20 month investigation, the NCAA found “significant recruiting violations” in the kU football program. kU was placed on 2 year’s probation and banned from post season play (not much of a penalty) and banned from TV ( a blessing for viewers)
Per Pravda (aka Lawrence Journal World) “…Violations cited in the release included offering large amounts of money and other benefits to prospective players, providing prospects with expense-paid visits to the campus, providing employment to athletes and filing false statements that Kansas was in compliance with NCAA rules….”
Note the last ? that is consistent in all their violations; cheat and then cover your tracks……
Coaches were not specifically cited but it was widely assumed John Hadl (you will hear his name in another kU scandal), Bud Moore, and long time MU hater Don Fambrough were involved…
A Sordid History of Cheating and Misdealing at (k)ansas (u)niversity…….
Chapter III…….The Early Years……………………
1960…….. kU Pres calls NCAA Investigator… "rude, bothersome and overbearing."…and complains NCAA… "dragged out" the matter so long ? much to the detriment of kU….” (from 10.23.60 LJW aka Pravda on the Kaw)
And there was good reason……the NCAA ? again lit into both basketball and football…resulting in multi year penalties to both programs, loss of scholarships, TV and post season bans…..
Wilt Chamberlain got a brand new red Olds convertible when he arrived on campus….kU kept it hush hush that an alum bought it and gave it to Wilt, signing tht title over when The Big Dipper left Larry….seems they got caught because Wilt got a little somethun’ somethun’ on the side every week in terms of cash from boosters…..
Bud Adams (yeah, same guy that owns the Oilers) is the son of the founder of Phillips Petroleum and you guessed it ….a kU alum from the Flint Hills….Bud rounded up some of his Wichita buddies and decided kU football needed a boost……so he went out and contacted Bert Coan (TCU), Rodger McFarland , Mickey Walker, Jim Street (all from aTm) about living life up in Larry…..all transferred…..all got cash for doing so,,,,,,and at no time were their coaches talked to…..
kU’s Jack Mitchell claimed he had no knowledge of Adam’s actions but son of a gun, ALL of those guys met a need for kU…..imagine that
ad we know kU beat MU in 1960……ending MU’s undefeated season and a likely NC….OU, MU, aTm and TCU all blew the whistle on the beakers………the NCAA set aside all the games these guys played in….yet kU STILL claims this as a win…..
1956 “…"I did not know at the time that this was an infraction of the rules”….Phog Allen (1957)
Well Phog ? you should have….The legendary college coach recruited Kent Bryan from KC Westport to kU…..Bryan, as amazing as this sounds, failed his entrance exam….enrolled at SLU…..left after a semester and transferred to Wyoming….Phog wanted this 6’8” post man, so he talked to Bryan while at Wyoming and convenced him to transfer to Larry, where he could work on his grades….Now, how could this be paid for?.....Why an unnamed KC physician and beaker alum volunteered to take care of his needs until they got him on scholarship……
Phog admitted to illegally transporting the kid to and from Larry but denied any knowledge of the financial arrangement….he was quoted that he thought the tuition was covered by “the boy’s family”….the NCAA saw it differently …..one year ban on post season play…..
Great quote in the LJW….from the May 2, 1956 edition…. “…There are informed sources who contend that Missouri University, a Big Seven neighbor, had a hand in both probes - KU and St. Louis. Missouri long has been recognized as a self-appointed Big Seven area "watchdog."…”
YA THINK?....Somebody better be with you arrogant, cheating b**tards as next door neighbors……..
By my count, nearly two dozen boosters have been banned form association with kansas Athletics....
kU is the 6th most penalized school in America per the NCAA....
There is NO doubt in mind that having the NCAA headquarters in KC saved them in the 80's if not at other time......If in Indy back then, I think they would have lost basketball after Manning for at least a year....
