I have Griswold and Wagners...biggest is a Griswold 16 Its a beast and worth a bunch to collectors. I have 4 dutch ovens, a couple hanging pots, and 5 or 6 other skillets and a chicken fryer that is an old Griswold.

Can someone tell me if some old ones that were left in the oven during a cleaning cycle can ever be restored. Looks like the surface was baked off—just not completely. I didn't do it but I was afraid to ever use them again.

Certainly. Your best bet is to finish stripping them with another cycle in the self-clean, or even by using some oven cleaner. Then start over with the seasoning. You'll need to do a few rounds before it becomes usable, but would totally be worth the time.

If you don't want them, PM and let's talk. :)

When I pick up a used, not taken care, cast iron cookware, I usually just make a big bonfire to clean it all up. Then steel wool it and re-season it proper.

It's a good deal. Don't forget you have to get the one on amazon shipped which adds costs. They had those at Bed Bath and Beyond last Spring for $25.

Prime member here and I'd have it no other way. Seems we order something every few weeks off Amazon and it can be a purchase under $5 and it's still free shipping and to my door in 2 days. Love it.

I thought they were doing away with that as amazon was losing money?

I use my daughter's account for free shipping 'cause she's in college.

It has cost money for many years. If you've never been a prime member, they will give you like a 1-month trial.

It's never been free. It was $79.99 a year, now $99 a year. It's worth it so we can order stuff whenever we want with free shipping (no matter the size of the order) and it arrives in 2 days instead of a week. Plus now you can stream whole albums and watch TV/Movies as well.

That sounds about right. I had it free for a bit as I recall, but haven't ordered in a long time.

I need Red Rooster to clean my copper pans but can't bring myself to order it there. Yet, no one around here carries it.

Well it doesn't have even close to everything like Netflix, but it has plenty of stuff we've never seen including multiple seasons of many TV show dramas, plus I can stream many albums over my stereo as well. I'd pay for it just for the shipping as it saves us a lot since we order from them quite a bit.

I use albums on You Tube for free and blast it. Especially when cleaning. Ramones are usually good for that. Keeps me in action. :D

The Truth About Cast Iron Pans: 7 Myths That Need To Go Away

Highlights without explanation below. Click the link to read more. I do not agree with all of these, though.

Quote:

Myth #1: "Cast iron is difficult to maintain."

Myth #2: "Cast iron heats really evenly."

Myth #3: "My well-seasoned cast iron pan is as non-stick as any non-stick pan out there."

Myth #4: "You should NEVER wash your cast iron pan with soap."

Myth #5: "Don't use metal utensils on your cast iron pan!"

Myth #6: "Modern cast iron is just as good as old cast iron. It's all the same material, after all."

Myth #7: "Never cook acidic foods in cast iron."

RobBlake 11-07-2014 02:26 PM

Dayze 11-07-2014 02:28 PM

I'm set on skillets... I need one or two larger dutch ovens, though. I only have one CI dutch oven, a relatively small 5-quart.

Dayze 11-07-2014 02:32 PM

I have a CI Dutch Oven on my Christmas list I had to provide to my mother-in-law. :)

I have done the EXACT same thing. I have one standard Lodge and one enameled Tramontina on the list.

Dayze 11-07-2014 02:37 PM

one year i mentioned I would like a new set of pots and pans; casually mentioned it etc. then at Christmas, they bought a bad ass set.

on the ride home, i mentioned to my wife that it was a really nice set, and they they shouldn't have spent that much money on me/us; and i thought it was probably $200 or something. My wife said "more". I said "300"?....she said "more". I stopped asking after $400. lol. Love the pots/pans.

Wow. Can they be my in-laws, too?

Pablo 11-07-2014 02:41 PM

My grandma is giving me a cast iron dutch oven and another cast iron skillet. She has to find it in the attic she tells me; and I doubt it's been used in a decade plus.

But I have one coming, so that's cool.

Dayze 11-07-2014 02:43 PM

lol.
yeah, every year or so, they completely do way more than is necessary. a good bottle of tequila as a gift, and I'm good to go.

in fact, I've proposed a few times that in lieu of gifts, we just have a kick ass dinner, with great wine, cocktails, a post dinner cigar etc. but I think everyone likes getting presents lol. I'd be good with a bad ass meal with some exceptional bottles of wine that one/we would normally not spend $ on etc.

That's awesome.

When my last grandmother passed a couple years ago, I got her cast iron stash, including a little 10-inch Griswold. That's by far my favorite. The quality is night and day different from what you buy today.

If it's old, it may take some cleanup, but it'll be a better pan than you can get new, that's almost a foregone conclusion.

I don't! I scrub grits out with salt and paper towel. Then run water in it. Then dry it. That's it. It's a pre-seasoned lodge and I never seasoned it. I bet that's my problem.

Just start seasoning. Heat on high for 5 minutes, 1 Tbsp. Canola oil, smear all over with paper towel so all you have is a very thin layer. You do NOT want drops or any areas of thick oil. Back on the burner (high) for 10 minutes. It will smoke. This is good.

Repeat.

Repeat.

Repeat.

Do this every time you cook in it and soon you'll have that thing in awesome shape.

I got one I use all the time on my grill but the first time I used it last year I made a mistake and grabbed it by the handle before it cooled off good enough. OUCH THE **** OUCH. Got to make sure the handle is cooled off before grabbing it.
