Following second meeting with Bill Self, guard Rio Adams decides he will transfer from KU

kcjayhawks5 04-08-2013 01:18 PM

I'm guessing Bill told him he won't ever play even if he stays all 4 years.

Braincase 04-08-2013 01:32 PM

Bill had to let him go. He has some talent, but he's been bringing too much drama to the team, attracting the wrong kind of attention. He'll land somewhere and play all he wants.

Well it will have to be a d2 school or the only place he will be playing next year is still on a bench.

Ceej 04-08-2013 01:40 PM

Sure does suck seeing freshman leave before they've fully matured and blossomed.

I think he could have been pretty decent.

But, in Self I trust.

He can drop to JuCo for a year, then pop back at D1 for another two years, if I recall NCAA rules correctly.

There's still no way I'm getting my hopes up on this one. If Cal pulls out all the stops to get Wiggins (and we know what those are), it's hard to see him choosing anywhere else but UK.

Pretty much. Burberry clothes and a nice new Rolex for Wiggins is on the way. Just like he did for Randle.

I thought we'd get Julius Randle before we'd get Wiggins. It seemed to me that Wiggins wasn't too excited during his official visit. I hope I'm wrong, though.

Chief_For_Life58 04-09-2013 04:43 PM

so bill has three scholarships to give out still correct?

Fansy the Famous Bard 04-09-2013 07:11 PM

Yep, we only have 5 scholarship players returning in Tharpe, White, Traylor, Lucas, and Ellis.

5 incoming, with 3 left over to make 13.

Ceej 04-10-2013 05:10 PM

KU is reportedly interested in Tarik Black who recently graduated from Memphis and is eligible to play ASAP.

6'9" 260 post player.

I wouldn't be opposed to snagging him with only one year of eligibility left.

I can give you the low down. Big guy, mediocre at everything. Not terrible, not great. He was the primary big for Memphis the last couple of years. He was the preseason POY in CUSA, but clearly didn't live up to that. He tends to get in foul trouble, doesn't rebound like you'd expect from a guy that big (5 boards/game) and is just ok in the post defensively. Offensively, he's not without some ability to score around the basket, but he doesn't shoot outside of 4 feet and he's an awful FT shooter.

He was voted team captain, yet, surprisingly missed a game or two early in the season with some type of attitude issue. Word was he was thinking of quitting/transferring at that point, but came back. From that point forward, he was first big off the bench (instead of starting) behind Shaq Goodwin, but still played 25 or so minutes a game.

By all accounts he's a good guy. He's bright (graduated in 3 years) and he won't hurt the team that gets him. Just don't expect too much.

He's worth taking on for most schools with an open scholly. Good enough dude, average player, and a big guy. You only use 1 year of scholly, and you're back on the recruiting trail with that scholarship available next season. You certainly won't find a JUCO kid any better, and those guys you'd consume two years of a scholarship.

Ceej 04-10-2013 06:04 PM

The more big bodies, the better IMO.

Especially using a scholarship for one year on him.

Lots of amazing young talent. Our non-con next year is gonna be a bitch too so they'll grow up fast. The Big 12 is supposed to be super weak again next year (likely worse than this year) so the non-con will help in conference play at least.

This guy looks like a great scorer. Smooth but not a great driver. But he can definitely shoot it well. I did only noticed 1 pass out of that bunch of highlight plays. He will have to learn to share the rock.

This is the rumored non-con...taken from Phog.net

Our non conference schedule looks insane

@Florida (or Arkansas not sure yet)
@Colorado
Duke in the Champions Classic
Georgetown at home
San Diego State at home
Battle for Atlantis tourney

Definite chance we're gonna take some early lumps with our young team next year. But last year was tough too as was 11.

Yeah. I managed to catch CUs game before KU played them and they were curb stomping somebody decent. Illinois maybe. And I though they'd at the very least give us a game. Nope. They rolled over like $4 hookers in AFH. I'm sure it will be different this year, but I was surprised they didn't give us a game.

This may have been posted somewhere else already but RE: be damned!

Quote:

"Jayhawks."
This one is so explosive that Marshall is likely to reserve it for late in the game, when a shot of rage can spark new life in tired legs.
It isn't just that Wichita's top high school player last year—Perry Ellis, a top-25 national recruit—signed with Kansas. It's that Kansas won't play Wichita State. Neither will Kansas State. Marshall's efforts to secure a home-and-home series with either or both have met with such futility that a state senator from Wichita this winter introduced a bill that would require the state's three Division I schools to play each other. But the bill's author, Michael O'Donnell, conceded it has won little if any support.
Kansas coach Bill Self declined to be interviewed for this story. But in the past he has dismissed the idea of playing in Wichita, saying Kansas needed to play nonconference games at home to generate revenue. And Marshall, who two years ago drew the ire of Jayhawk administrators by spouting the word "Chickenhawks," finds offensive any talk of an annual showdown in Lawrence. "I won't be bought by Kansas," Marshall said this week in an interview.
To add insult to injury, Kansas State has scheduled a game next season in Wichita—but against Gonzaga, at a neutral site.
Especially galling to Marshall is any suggestion that Kansas or Kansas State might weaken their strength-of-schedule rating by playing Wichita State every year. Noting that Wichita State outlasted both of those Big 12 schools in this year's tournament, Marshall said, "They don't want to play us for fear of losing."
Yet should Marshall seek to stoke anger by likening blue blood Louisville to blue blood Kansas, a ready response awaits Pitino: Western Kentucky, the Wichita State of bluegrass country. The state's most successful all-time team, the Kentucky Wildcats, rarely schedules games against Western Kentucky. But Louisville does, every year, sometimes to its detriment, as when the unranked Hilltoppers upset the third-ranked Cardinals in 2008.

As a freshman at Kansas, he will make an immediate splash with his inside scoring, short jumper and shot-blocking abilities. By the time he’s a sophomore for the Jayhawks, expect him to dominate the paint. He’s not a household name yet but he could be after his time at Kansas. When it’s all said and done, Embiid might end up being the best big man Bill Self has ever coached...

Biggest sleeper: Joel Embiid
Embiid is the best player in the game whom most people don’t know much about, but that could very well change after the JBC. At 7-foot, he makes short jumpers and jump hooks and also block shots well. It’s an understatement to say he’s rapidly improving.

He can also shoot the 3 real well for a 7 footer.

Chiefs Pantalones 04-12-2013 09:37 PM

Adam Finkelstein ‏@FinkelsteinNERR

Joel Embiid has a lot to learn but his talent level is off the charts. One of best NBA prospects here IMO.

Nice compliment from ESPN's Finkelstein for Embiid.
