Beef Supreme 11-13-2015 09:38 AM

I just got the quest to find Nick Valentine. And just got Piper as a companion. Gonna put in some serious time this weekend.

My biggest dilemma is I want to use all the guns. I've got points in Rifleman, and I am digging most of those guns. The hunting rifle with marksman stock, short light barrel and red dot sight is a favorite. The laser rifle is wonderful. But I also kinda love a modded up 10mm pistol, but I got other places I want to put points. I can live without the automatics for the most part. They go through ammo too fast. I'm sure I'll eventually level up pistols when I get other stuff filled out.

Anybody have a few favorite guns I need to try?

Yeah, I saw a combat shotgun on a vendor in Diamond city. Was thinking about buying it, it wasn't very much, but figured I would probably start running into them dropping off mobs. Might just go ahead and buy it though. I love me some shotguns.

I'm really frustrated by the settlement addition. I like it, but I feel like it's not very intuitive, and they didn't provide some basic tutorials for much of it.

I'm kinda doing the bare minimum with settlements atm. It's clunky, boring and everything I build looks like shit. Once someone does a video that shows me step by step how to make something cool, maybe I'll spend more time on it.

Don't know what it is but this game just isn't that fun to me.

I'm really digging this game though.

How are the missions? I gave up on NV after tracking down like 5 people, just to talk to them and returning. Only to be asked to go talk to more people. Got sick of running around NV.

So far, pretty good. I'm only level 13 though. New Vegas had several stretches here and there where it felt like a whole lot of running around and talking. I hate that shit too, give me a quest or two and get me out in the wasteland killing shit.

I haven't run into anything like that so far in 4, but who knows.

GloucesterChief 11-13-2015 03:11 PM

Does anybody know if Martha's Vineyard is in the game? If not, I am thinking that is surely going to be DLC.

Edit: Comparing maps it looks like they sliced I-95 beltway around Boston and a little west and used that for the map.

They are a couple areas they can use for easy DLC in MA:

Martha's Vineyard
Plymouth & Cape Cod
Gloucester

Reached level 15 last night. Things are mostly as expected with the game. Character graphics are clunky, but environment graphics are nice. They have some very serious flaws with the controls though. At least on PC. If you happen to use anything other than WSAD keys for movement, you have to deal with some major bullshit with key controls. I'm actually one of the few who uses EDSF keys for movement. When you set that, it completely ****s with controls in many other modes like settlement building. And you're constantly grabbing things and dragging them when you don't want to. Big facepalm by Bethesda there.

The guns are amazing. I geek out on the complex customizations quite a bit. Ammo is scarce and expensive though. So you end up using whatever gun you happen to have ammo for, as opposed to sticking with one awesome gun. And even then, I end up doing gun bash finishers as often as possible to save shells. I have a pimped out weapon of just about every caliber available.

The settlement building is fun. But I can't really see the point of it in the long run. I guess it gives you some free supplies.

Boss battles are tough. I defeated the Mirelurk Queen, and holy shit that took me forever.

Adhesive. JFC.... Don't you ever pass a roll of duct tape or Wonderglue and not pick that shit up, bro. Seriously.

Workbench... that confused the shit out of me for quite a while. Took me way too long to figure out how to transfer my junk materials to the workbench to use them for gun/ammo building.

Some of the Perks are frustrating. The good ones require you to be at specific player levels.

Hint: Get a bad ass legendary fusion rifle, and nice armor early on by completing the Brotherhood of Steel mission in Cambridge.

Save often........

Great info. Thanks, fish. Gonna rep when I get to a desktop.

Fallout 3. I remember wearing that thing and walking into an old, dark abandoned building that had at least 100 feral ghouls throughout it (I believe it was the Chrysler building). Anyways, I crouched down in the middle of a big, dark room, and just watched Feral Ghouls slowly roam around me for about ten minutes. Super ****ing creepy.

Honestly I probably have not played much of an RPG game since Ocarina of Time on the N64

It piqued my curiosity with all the hype, but there are a lot of negative reviews already for some reason

I am wondering if it would be better to pick up Fallout 3 or New Vegas on the cheap to see what the franchise is like before considering the newest one

Yeah, try Fallout 3 on the cheap first. I'd try that over New Vegas because it's better, and more similar to this one. And if you like midevial fantasy, I'd go with Skyrim over anything.

So, everyone settled right off the bat in Sanctuary? I did the minuteman mission, led them back to Sanctuary, dropped my power armor in a random house for storage, and set off for Diamond City. I saved up 2000 caps and bought the home plate house on Diamond City to set up my hub there (sort of like Megaton). Was this a bad strategy?

Gonzo 11-13-2015 05:21 PM

Got Preston as a buddy recently. He's not worth a shit.
I'm going back to Valentine or Dogmeat.

Codsworth is ok too, especially for attack dogs and smaller critters.

I like sanctuary just because you can build it up like a mofo. I've got a water purifier, 18 residents, 50+ defense, 30 clean water and like, 30 food so I'm set.

Trading is easier there and it just has that, "I'm home" feel to it. There's really no wrong way to do this. You can settle at several different places.

Yeah, I just traveled back and started building there. Completed the mission for building it up a bit. I assume with this is done, I'll have several settlements anyways. For now, Strong and I are off to explore.

I found Strong (the mutant companion) locked up at the top of the Trinity tower near Diamond City. Beware though, it's a battle to get to the top. I was level 6 when I did it. I figured out halfway up that I was too low level to be doing it. My foolish pride wouldn't let me stop, though.

There is a lot of that. But there are so many story lines going at once that it seems like its not boring. Obviously there has to be some of the go defend this settlement or go kill these guys type of thing even when there is no step and fetch it routine.

Don't have time to immerse myself in FO4 yet, so waiting until after the holidays but following this thread. Sounds pretty awesome so far, minus the graphics which were never a selling point for FO in the first place. Is there a consensus as to best platform? Considering a new gaming laptop.

If you have Kellog's gun use it against the sentry bots. I believe that it does bonus damage against armor.

He also comes with a laser pistol and hunting rifle for ranged damage.

Just did MacCready's companion request. That shit was brutal. I had to go in with a fat man and used VATS to increase accuracy and avoid self-immolation. It was fun as hell, but tough for a level 16 to get done without some firepower.

Yep. Same here. What sucks is that I do want them there when shot hits the fans but as long as I can go slow and snipe, then I want them to sit back and shut the hell up while I work.

I guess I could tell them to wait somewhere, but then I'd have to run back and grab them when the firefight started. And that sucks.

I haven't even heard of the quest he mentioned. The funny thing is, my journey has taken me south. I am just starting to venture east from Sanctuary. I read a caption during the load menu stating that enemies don't level with you, but the further south you go the tougher they get, or something along those lines. That would explain why this game has been so brutal to me. Of course they chose to toss me that life preserver once I learned to swim and am no longer drowning.

What are good skills and characteristics to focus on early on? I literally have no idea what will be most important at this point.

IIRC, I added an additional point to strength, endurance, intelligence, charisma and agility. Also focused on medicine, sneak, and some other skill that I can't recall at the moment..

I always thought small guns was important because that's initially what you do most of your fighting with. Medicine is obviously good because it adds more juice to the stimpaks and you'll use a lot early on while building up your character. Other than that, I like science or lockpick, which might help you get into more safes and restricted areas early on.

On every playthrough of that game, the first thing I do is go to Megaton visit Moira in the general store, and complete her wasteland survival guide mission. It will send you to a variety of places, and help you get a good feel for the game. On each part of the mission, try and do the extra optional part. It gives a better reward.

I couldn't find the quest either.

And yeah, I've tried not to venture too far south. I saw the same message, but I saw it early on.

It depends on the character you want to play, but I stack intelligence, perception, and charisma because I want to be able to rank up quicker, access all parts of the game (lock picking [perception] and computer terminals [intellegence]), and I want to be able to purchase things quickly.

Basically, I prefer to open as much of the world as possible to start.

I truly don't know how I made it to Fenway at level 5, but I've enjoyed quite a bit of the missions I've received.

The combat is better in Fallout 4. The non - vats shooting in 3 was ... not very good. It's still a great game, but 4 does most stuff a little to a lot better, in my opinion. Still some nagging things, same ones I've had with almost all Bethesda titles, but I am really loving this game so far.

Adhesive. Make vegetable starch!! 5 adhesives per. You need corn, mutfruit, tato, and purified water.

And set up supply lines between settlements that have the veggies.

I'm level 31 and I just recently saved Valentine from the vault he was being held in. I've been focusing on side missions.

Yes, combat is shit in 3. Keep going if you enjoy RPG's, looting, and unique weapons. Just strictly use VATS for fighting.

It keeps saying 'press RB for VATS' in the top right corner. I press it and nothing changes..

I'll need to check out the manual to figure that out..

I also have no idea how to run LMAO

Life got a lot easier once I put some effort into the settlements. I have supply lines chained across the waste land and a scavenging station set up at the more populated settlements. Between the farms and the scavenging stations I'm loaded with junk/mats for adhesive. I can now focus on guns/armor and ammo without having to worry as much about being weighed down.

Are the people assigned to farming supposed to automatically add food to your storage or what?

I'm having a helluva time finding my shit.

I made a few medium generators to power that transporter at Sanctuary. After that mission, I stored them in my workshop.
Went to the workshop table at sanctuary, not there.

Anyone?

Oh, and the damn thing has crashed on me four or five times now. I'm going to try and play offline since there's no real online component. Maybe that'll help.

Also,
It took me for-****ing-ever to figure out the railroad mission. I refused to look it up online.

If you all want to know, here:

Spoiler!

Scrapped 'em accidentally?

I'm up to Level 9 and took advantage of the You are Special/Dogmeat glitch to take my special points to 10s across the board.

I'm to the end of the zombie clearing mission, but am getting torn apart so I may go level up with my newfound charisma and come back with power armor for it.

Oh and I'd read somewhere that you can't find legendary opponents without being at the highest level. That doesn't appear to be 100% true as I ran into a legendary goul last night.

There are legendary monsters placed in certain missions. I'm interested to see if they revert characters back to what their SPECIAL stats were before boosting once they patch that.
