Alaska Airlines CEO says loose bolts found on 'many' planes
The CEO of Alaska Airlines has ripped Boeing in the wake of the recent near-disaster, revealing that loose bolts were found on “many” of the company's 737 MAX 9 planes. CEO Ben Minicucci said that a new in-house inspection of the Boeing model in the fleet has uncovered that “many” of the planes had loose bolts.

United Airlines has found loose door plug bolts on at least five of the Boeing 737 Max 9 planes, as airlines begin inspecting planes following the Federal Aviation Administration’s temporary grounding order.

The loose bolts were found during initial inspections of what is known as the “mid-cabin door plug” partway down the fuselage of the 737-9, according to maintenance logs viewed by Skift.

“LH Mid Cabin Emergency Exit Door Plug, Upper Forward Guide Fitting, Lower Attach Bolts (2 ea.) are loose,” reads one of the reports, which was dated January 8.

I do actively look for flights that are Airbus now, but it doesn't always work out. Their seats hurt my back but that's better than being blown out of an airplane.

They really should fix that stuff.

I specifically picked Airbus planes on my next flight. It's kind of hard to tell sometimes on the flight selector what's a Max Boeing versus a non-crashing Boeing.

I saw an article the other day that said that Boeing was well-run until they absorbed McDonnell Douglas and their poor culture, and it made me laugh sadly. My few years working at McDonnell Douglas were kind of shocking. I was on the military side and not the civilian side, but the level of competence and professionalism was shockingly low. It's hard to believe that they actually produced planes that got off the ground. Maybe it was just my department that was poorly run, because I was in a really tight silo, but ... jeez. It was bad.

Rain Man 03-11-2024 07:36 PM

https://www.yahoo.com/news/boeing-wh...211331098.html - A former Boeing employee known for raising concerns about the firm's production standards has been found dead in the US.

Regarding my previous post, I was hacked. I never said anything negative about Boeing. I love Boeing. Great people at Boeing. I was hacked.

Took Uber to Nashville Airport this morning at 4:20am. Very crowded for that time of morning.

Quick through security. American's Admiral Club right next to my gate. In working and ready to board. Full flight again.

Went through Sky a few weeks ago. It was quick / efficient to get through security. Place was packed, but they had it going smoothly that Sunday.

Remove the overhead bins all together or make them just big enough for a coat. Check it or suck it.

Problem solved.

Carry on has to be weighed at that air bridge to the door of the plane. Scale also is a trap door that flows down to the baggage handlers. Boarding pass is scanned, the carryon is weighed, if it is too heavy the trap door opens the carryon slides down to baggage handling immediately. If customer bitches, they are off the plane.

Problem solved.

Flew into Las Vegas last this morning from Sky Harbor. Not too crowded for a change.

10 minutes to get through security and the shitty American Admirals Club down by A14 blows. Too small, shitty food and too crowded. The other by A7 in the other concourse is supposed really much nicer and bigger.

Flight arrived 20 minutes early and had to wait 25 minutes for our gate to be available. Jumped in a cab, grabbed a haircut at Supercuts that took 15 minutes and checked into the Trump International up on the 49th floor. Not too shabby. 2nd time stayed here.

If you haven't heard, the Chase Sapphire lounge at PDX just opened. The one at BOS is my favorite lounge I've been to in the U.S. that doesn't require international travel. If I lived in Phoenix, I'd consider getting a CSR again just to get access.

How often are you upgraded for free? Someone told me it's very hard now because people are buying 1st class and not so many open seats for free upgrades.

Looks awesome! Sadly I can't remember ever flying out of that concourse - I gave up Southwest since I fly business on AA

I'll check out who else flies from that terminal.

Thanks for the heads up

Today something happened for the first time in my 43 year traveling history: on my flight this morning from Phoenix Sky Harbor to Charlotte, we had an aborted landing about 10 feet off the ground and wheels ready to touchdown when the windshear alert alarm went off in the cockpit. The pilot threw the plane into full speed ahead and we quickly climbed away from the runway.

The wings were going up and down 20 feet at a time like a see saw. If we landed at that moment, I am 100% sure a wing hits the runway. The winds were ferocious.

The last 40 minutes of the flight was some of the most extreme turbulence I have dealt with and a lot of nervous people on board.

We recircled the airport and landed about 15 minutes later to the entire cabin full of passengers applauding very loudly.

My little puddle jumper from Charlotte to Lynchburg was held for 30 minutes as wind speeds exceeded safe takeoff levels.

The landing at Lynchburg was no picnic either.......

Drinking to calm my nerves.

JK, glad you're alright.

teedubya 02-17-2025 10:27 AM

Eh, that airport isn't so bad. I think it's much worse when you are at OHare... and have land in terminal C at the end... then have to go to B terminal at the other end... on the same airline. OHare can be a bitch in Chicago, for sure.

Some international airports aren't that user friendly either.

A go-around? Big deal. I've had about a dozen.

Don't mind traveling, this just got all screwed up due to the storms. 4 of 5 meetings around Virginia all got cancelled. My flight from Atl to DFW was cancelled last night and that has caused a huge delay for me.

First pleasant experience flying through Houston from Cozumel yesterday. Arrived at gate E14, the walk to customs was quick and not a crowded walk, nobody was in the Global Entry line, bags took less than 5 minutes to arrive (plenty of time to pee), rechecked the checked bags (such a silly thing TSA makes you do!!!), sidestepped IAH's regular "rechecked bags" TSA checkpoint by walking toward the airport exit signs and riding the elevator up to the regular TSA checkpoint (that has TSA Pre), United Club at gate E12, and left out of gate E12. I shit on IAH a LOT, but yesterday they earned an A+ from GloryDayz...

Lesson learned. Never, and I mean NEVER make HNL into some kind of hub to get to better tropical pacific places unless you happen to have hotel stays (before and after the places you connected to thru HNL) built into your stay. HNL has to be one of the biggest regional (and little more) airports I've been a vicim of recently.

I may visit Hawaii again, but HNL will get never get pass-through recommendations from me.

Today was a peach. Flight to Atlanta on time, security 5 minutes and over an hour of time to kill. Sadly AA's club is not in that area as I left from the B28 gate in the international terminal and tried boarding a flight to Guatemala at Gate 26. Damn gate was on left and it look like everyone was boarding Gate 28.

Everything was announced in Spanish and all the people realized I didn't belong. ROFL

Why Not? 03-25-2025 03:53 PM

Did some international travel last week. The newer Sky Club at MCI was awesome! The one in Atlanta was crazy, but that’s to be expected. Delta One is pricey but for a flight to Germany, well worth it to us. Getting to fully lay down and relax is worth its weight in gold on a long flight. Austria and Czech Republic for a week (highly recommended). Then flew Prague (didn’t love that airport, it was okay just not my cup of tea) to Amsterdam. Schiphol airport was easy to get around but huge! Enjoyed our couple of hours there. KLM back to Atlanta. What a great airline! Phenomenal service, relaxing flight, cool perks, I would definitely recommend them for international travel. All said, outside of our trip being delayed a day due to the German airport strike (we flew into Munich then drove to Salzburg) it was a really stress free and good travel experience.

GloryDayz 03-25-2025 04:10 PM

Clubs, IMO, are well worth the cost. I've done Delta's, American's and (obviously) United's, and all do a pretty darn good job. The son and I did that non-airline club in Brussels (I forget the name) and it too was awesome. I'd say lounges are a must if your layover is 3 or more hours.

I got a Venture X a little while back and I'm aiming for a first class flight to Europe late next year, at least one way... I don't think it's something I'd personally pay for, but at the same time would be pretty ****ing sweet to do at least once.

Did you do any train travel along the way? I've never been to central Europe and would one day love to meander across several countries.

Sadly AA's club is not in that area as I left from the B28 gate in the international terminal and tried boarding a flight to Guatemala at Gate 26. Damn gate was on left and it look like everyone was boarding Gate 28.

No but we were there with my 16 year old’s HS choir so as a part of the package we had tour buses do all the transportation. It also included guides who were expats living in Austria. They were awesome as were the buses and drivers so we really felt it was done right all the way. The kids absolutely crushed their performances (4 in total) which made it all the sweeter. Since it was a musical group trip, we did all the music stuff. Toured Mozart’s apartment, saw all the Sound of Music shit, visited Beethoven’s grave. On top of the normal castle and church tours. It was really quite amazing. Even got to hit a pro soccer game in Prague.

I do the United Quest (Chase) card and I've been wondering about going the Capital One route and not being tied to an airline. I've be interested in hearing how it works for you in terms of gaining points, status, lounges, and ease of booking. I DON'T think United has been really awesome, but once you have status it's hard to give up, but between Capital One and, perhaps, moving over to Delta, I'm starting to see how challenging the process will be.

C1 is great for lounge access...if you frequently travel through one of the airports where they have their own. Priority Pass lounges sound nice in principle, and they do have SOME value, but with every major travel card giving Priority Pass access, those lounges are often crowded and rarely anything too exciting.

There's not a ton to get excited about in terms of status. It does comes with Hertz President's Circle status, but I personally haven't found that to be very valuable.

I do like the flexibility of the card, though. It's effectively a $0 annual fee card assuming you're willing to book travel through their portal to get the $300 credit back.

Too many people and too few planes.

Yeah, I looked at their lounges and they just don't seem to have too many so you're left having to either not use lounges, or use the lounge of the airline you flying, with its cost of entry. That said, I have traveled a lot in the last year, but I expect that to slow down in the coming year so keeping status with United is going to be difficult.

Thanks..
