Herrera looks like he's throwing at 150 mph after watching Chen for three innings.

Maybe Yost is going to proceed with Holland as the "soft" closer, but if there's any rational reason to go with Herrera instead (Holland pitched too much yesterday, Herrera matches up better with these guys, etc) Yost will go with the other guy?
Maybe no one will be given the right under almighty God to get all available saves, its just "hey, all else being equal it'll be Holland, but it if ain't equal, it'll be whatever it'll be". I'd be cool with that. Its not quite getting away from the closer and embracing the "best reliever is the fireman" that most stat heads want, but it'd be progress. |
I wonder if Ned calls Herrera Kevin.

And, perhaps as important long term, you get to again test Herrera's mettle in the 9th. Yost almost certainly wants to keep Holland in the 9th. At the same time, he probably also wants to make sure that Herrera has the tenacity for the role. Tonight he's fired one well high and wide on his first pitch that could've gone to the backstop with a lesser catcher, then he threw one about 60 feet from the mound. He doesn't look entirely comfortable and that's working with a 3-run lead against a hapless lineup. This is interesting to watch and I'm sure Yost is paying attention. |
Man. This dude has the stuff to be downright un-hitable.
